Yes.

A safer way to add a handle and hang them from a shelf or rack with slots cut in them to suit the size of the file.

I have a dickie plastic self supporting shelf I bought from Bunnings with various size holes in it for tools.
The thing sits about 200 mm above any flat surface and I just poke files through the holes.
Its not ideal but it works.

A file is cutting tool, with lots of little knives on the edges.
Those knives are not designed to rattle and bump around in a drawer or tray with all the other stuff we put in there.
Like Bob suggested hang them up individual.

At $60 for a file these days I definitely would not throw in a bunch with other files

A few years ago I ordered three sawfiles on eBay.

They turned up loose in and envelope, had been rubbing and banging against each other half-way around the world.

Bloody pommy basratd could not understand why I demanded they be replaced.

Same thing goes for drill bits. The number of tradesmen I see that carry around all their bits together in one compartment is astonishing. Not a sharp one amongst them (or the bits )

Now o'course if you've done what Matt has done, and purchased a whole bunch of plastic handled files (GRRRR.....) it prolly won't matter how you store them....they'll still never cut any steel.....but as you can see Matt uses them mainly for timber, at which I'm sure they are nearly adequate.......

What sort of file would you fork out $60 for ?

Any new precious ones I get I wrap in a roll of canvas .
One goes down onto the canvas, roll it once then the next and so on .

All the rest get placed in a drawer. I Try to place them softly and don't go rattling them around but I haven't yet got around to doing anything else .

Funny thing is they still all cut metal or wood ok. I don't throw any out , just keep adding to them. Or very rusty worn ones go to the rusty steel section in a bucket . They sometimes get cut up for other tools.
