    Default Fitting a Dawn # 8

Bought a Dawn number 8 quick release vice on Ebay the other day, now I need to make a bench, have been holding off on this project until I had a vice.
Any tips on fitting the vice to the bench, i.e. timber size, spacers, location on bench etc.
A line drawing would be handy.

Thanks for that Matrix, any chance of getting one from the front right ? ........ no just kidding

Sorry a little earlier than mine.

But as a rough guess ....... bolt the vice to the bench using the holes you see in the pictures

    No no really.....

front left of the bench, hardwood between the vice and the bench, I made mine so the top of the vice was flush (about) to the top of the workbench. So the thickness of the wood would depend on the thickness of the bench I suppose. I then countersunk the top of the bench and used bolts to attach it through the bench and hardwood.

Oh I also glued the hardwood to the underside of the bench. It made it easier to drill the holes straight through.
    I must apologise, I've had one or ... I forgot.... shandies ....

Holy cow Matrix, that looks exactly like the one I bought on Ebay, same paint marks and all. Seriously, thanks for saving me the trouble of posting the pics.

    G'day Santalum,

When I fitted my no. 9 Dawn

    • I measured the back face of the vice (no idea what it's called - but that's what I'm calling it) to make a cardboard template, using this template I cut into the apron of my bench and got real nice tight fit.

    • I then cut into the bench top to get the vice flush with the edge of the bench

    • then measured how far into the bench I needed to drill the two holes (there are four but found two held it real firm to the underneath of the bench) with a spade bit

    • then I cut some chocks to fit beneath the bench to keep the vice horizontal to the bench

Hope all thta is as clear as mud, it's probably not but with my beaut explanation and Meerkat's maybe it's a help
I make things, I just take a long time.
