Jim,
Would changing from cutlers to screw rivets be seen as tapering with the "original" look of the saw?
Or are the screw rivets considered a better solution, and to be used in preference to cutlers when replacement is required?

Others in these forums will know better than I do but I reckon cutlers rivets were a cheaper option for the manufacturer and not as reliable as screw rivets. If you are using the saw you don't want it moving in the handle. You can keep the other rivets if you want to make sure you don't lose the authenticity.

Hi Tom,
Noticed this item 120273123125 on a well know on-line auction site.
Might be some of the right size for your saw.

If replaced with screw type brass rivets who is going to know anyhow. (except all of us who read this thread).

Don't cut into those brass bits.
They are rivets... (from my experiance) and you can easily tighten them by bashing them with a hammer! softly of course. Use a scrap of wood as or like a punch to drive it home.
then oil the handle well, the timber will soak it up and swell a litlle making for a really tightly fitted handle.
You will destroy the handle tring to remove the rivets.
Good luckSteven Thomas

Orroloon... i love your secret society take on the issue.
Lumber bunker, thank you for your insight as to how to deal with these cutlers rivets.
I will give them a tap with some wood protection and get some BLO onto the handle and then will report back in a week or so on the progress.
Thank you to all that have contributed.
