Default Fixing Rear Bun Handle For Braces

I have two braces that are missing the rear head handle. Is their any specific way to turn make and secure these to the steel. Can anyone give me some pointers.

Their is no thread on the end. I suspect that some kind of fixing / joining thimajig is missing.

I do not care about collectable I just need to get them working again.

Turning a new bun is a minor challenge, TS, finding the missing metal bush/disc & circlips will be a major one! Looks to me like someone started out to repair them, got distracted, & never went back to finish the job. Whoever 'tidied up' the original owner's tools probably didn't know the buns were supposed to be there, or couldn't find the bits. It might be possible to find spare parts, but I reckon it would be quicker to bribe/cajole/pay someone with a decent metal lathe to make a couple for you.

Old tools with crucial bits missing is an all-too-common story, isn't it? For example, how many old 78s do you find complete with their fences & fence rods? I helped sort FIL's shed after he moved on, & amongst the tools was a bare 78, with a blade worn within about 2mm of the shoulder. So it had obviously seen a good deal of use in its time, but there was no sign of the fence, rod or depth stop anywhere near where the plane was stored, & I reckoned they'd long since gone to the plane gods who gaher them up somewhere in another galaxy. However, much to my surprise, I eventually found them all, including the depth-stop in a tin of used nails & screws which I almost chucked in the bin without checking! The fence & fence-rod were in equally unlikely places. So that old plane is still a full unit. I wonder if they'll manage to stay with the plane when someone sorts my tools?...

    Cheers,
    IW

you could of course try a dodgy repair, turn something in wood that was open at the rear, with access to the circlip slot that you could get something onto there? Certainly not original in any way but may turn it usable again....

Geoff, you just hafta get up earlier - a LOT earlier, given the time difference...

I thought that you might be able to come up with a suggestion for acquiring the missing metal parts, but I imagine such bits would be about as common as feathered frogs...

    Cheers,

Good thinking Ian, TS if you want to tell us what brand and model No they are I could look through my spare part cache and possibly help you out. They look like British Stanleys to me, but I could be wrong.
    Cheers,
    Geoff.

Thumbsucker, if it suits you I could make the required steel parts on my metal lathe and also make the timber bun parts as well on my wood lathe. The cost would be the postal journey from you to me, then from me to you. I could probably turn it around in a few days to a week.
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

Ian these are from my school. Like so many things, were taken apart and never finished. I just got through fixing 20 vices that were pulled apart for repairs but ended up dumped in a corner. The fact the kids had no vices does not seem to have been a problem. I have 10 Turners Planes disabled and major parts missing. I might end up selling the planes for parts and using the money to purchase some whole planes. The woodworking workshop has more tool parts then tools.

I would like to get the braces running again so the kids can use them. chambezio thanks for the kind offer. I will send you a PM.
