    Default Flattening a sole

    (Message to mods: I know this is being dealt with elsewhere, but I can't find it.Move if you think neccessary)

    I have a few rather sorry planes that need a good fettle and some loving.
    I know how to go about the fettling, but on a recent post, an experienced member suggested starting with 20 grit, and working up to 1200 gtit.
    I have never gone past 220, and the soles on my planes are flat in all directions when checked with a straight edge.
    What is the consensus??Should I go further, and, if so, why?I can remove a fag paper 's worth of shaving at a time.

    I vote no. The more perfect the surface the more 'stiction' you'll get. If you can move a fag paper (0.001"=0.02mm) then you are pretty much there. If you wax the soles of your planes there's going to more than 220 grit variation in levels anyway. (unless you apply way more evenly than I do).

    I just bought a corrugated plane which kind of defines a rough but flat finish.

    Go up to 400 grit on the base and the sides, then scrape the sole of the plane leaving the high spots at the mouth and the periphery of the plane. They just gliiiiiiiiiiiide.
