Framing chisel question
Hi. I picked up this massive framing chisel this morning. I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about it - likely age etc - just for curiosity sake.
Obviously the handle is a replacement. To me, its just a working tool so I have already run it over a scotchbrite belt as a fairly brutal way of cleaning it up. Would still like to know something about it though.
thanks

Hi Arron
What you have is about 100 odd years old. Marples is a old English brand, actually one of several companies in the same field. See the following link for some info: http://www.marples.co.uk/page2.html
The Marples chisel you own likely has very respectable steel, unlike the Marples that begat Record that begat modernisation in the form of "Blue Chip" chisels. Further, socket chisels are just so much stronger than tanged chisels.
Nice one.
Regards from Perth
