However, I get by with the much cheaper metal frame I've had for 30 years or more, and for the amount of metal sawing I do, I haven't been able to justify the cost of a new frame (yet).
IanW as you imply getting a KC fret saw frame is only a matter of time

I may be able to offer a suggestion regarding the issue of clamping a very narrow blade.

I picked up a couple of sets of vice jaws from the $10 bin at Mitre10. That was not intentional. I should explain that I often peruse this bin in case there is something there I had not realised I needed . However the second time I purchased I had not realised I had already thought they might come in useful at a point in the past. So I ended up with two sets . They are primarily intended for welding applications I believe, but of course can be adapted to whatever you want.

My two sets were fairly sloppily made. What do you expect for $10? The first pair were just not suitable for this new purpose as the jaws seemed to have two bevels:

The second set were a better bet but were not parallel:

So I ground them parallel and increased the bevel to give better clearance and room.

Then I could hold a jigsaw blade quite easily. The vice grips themselves are just held in the bench vice.

I am sure that this could be adapted to your fret saw blades, coping saw blades and frame saw blades, although you would have to keep moving the vice along.

Hi Paul. Clever. And you have helped justify my purchases of stuff from the same box. Be careful when Bunnings has their regular clearout of Irwin stuff. Over the last 18 moths or so they have had a couple of brand specific sales and the prices are pretty good

    Thanks MA

I will try to remember and look out for the Bunnings sales, but they, unfortunately, are not quite so conveniently located for me at 80Km away. I am not expecting a Bunnings outlet to open up in Millmerran anytime soon.

    Default Good as Gold

As mentioned earlier, I decided to buy the Pegas coping saw and spare 18 tpi blades from Carbatec in Auckland. As I was on their site completing the order, SWMBO looked over my shoulder and suggested that, as it is our Golden Anniversary next month, I might like to buy something else to go with the coping saw and she would pay for the lot as an anniversary present (I'm sure it was also a diplomatic way to remind me of the date )

So I added a Veritas fine tooth dovetail saw to the order and the order arrived yesterday.

The Veritas will have been reviewed and commented on many times on the forum I'm sure so no need for me to add anything. I will say that I am very pleased with Pegas saw. The frame is sturdy, much thicker and weightier than my cheapo coping saw and the blade doesn't twist in the frame when in use like my old one. Both saws cut well straight from the box. I also have to give credit to Carbatec in Auckland. They would have picked up my order first thing Thursday morning, processed and despatched it and it arrived at my home outside Wellington at 11.30 am on Friday morning - well done Carbatec and NZ Post.

Now I'm off to cut some dovetails
    Pete
