German woodworking sites
I use Chrome and it offers to translate into english. I don't know if the other browsers will do it as easily.
This has become a game of "which website comes before this one?"
I don't know the language - I have tried to put the web pages into some sort of order ...

Start with a basic description of saw sharpening:
Holzbearbeitung mit Handwerkzeugen (Techniken: Säge schärfen)
"Cross-sectional or longitudinal?American woodworkers make between saws for cross-and longitudinal sections a distinct difference. Saws for cutting along the grain (Schlitzsäge; 'rip cut') have a different tooth shape as Absetzsägen ('cross cut'). To the question of whether and how this distinction has played a role with us, I have to elsewhere written more. I want to first describe the simpler way of sharpening the optimized tooth form for longitudinal cuts. Of course you can do with such a ADAPTED also saw cross-sections, but the (mainly softwood) are not so clean."

There's an ordinary page on sharpening irons and chisels ... but he talks about old text-books saying that cap-irons should have a small flat ground across the front edge. This ties in to the recent discussions about the japanese university studies and the consequences ... but this page must pre-date those discussions I think.
"Finally, it must in a double plane iron nor the valve can be adapted to the iron. The flap has at its lower edge firmly against the iron, so that no intervening shavings settle and clog the mouth can. Best after you cut the bearing edge when sanding anything, just to be sure. In old textbooks is recommended that the front edge of the flap to grind a small step height of about one millimeter in order to facilitate the breaking of the chip (see Figure). I have observed that in none but my old plane. Finally it should be the top of the flap at the bottom of polish yet, so the chips can easily glide over."
Blades with flap (from Biel: 'On the bench' [1954]):
I don't know if he has any info on how far to set the cap-iron back.

I also want to thank Philip Walker of Needham Market, England for his assistance with several items in the text whose meanings had eluded me, and Raymond R. Townsend for his considerable help and support, especially in supplying the following clarification of the vinegar chip plane (Page 40) from Knight's American Mechanical Dictionary:
"Wine-vinegar is made - principally in France - from inferior wines and grape refuse. The liquid is clarified by straining through a tun filled with beechwood chips. The process occupies several weeks."
