Grindstone on ebay
Very similar to the one I used (about sixty years ago) -- if I lived close to the seller I would buy it in a heartbeat!

I asked for, and received, permission from eBay member kernowlincoln (owner of the copyright) to use his photographs of the grindstone on my web site.
I have now included the photographs to accompany the following text ..........
Apprentices were taught how to sharpen their chisels under the tutelage of the older craftsmen and thereafter were supposed to properly maintain them. A communal foot pedal operated water trough grindstone was used for major bevel profiling. The high carbon steel used in woodworking cutting tools in those days precluded using power driven carborundum wheels which could destroy the steel hardness due to the friction heat generated. Bevel profiling was slow, for sure, but preserving the integrity of the steel was paramount. Oil stones were used to produce cutting edges -- at first under the supervision of older craftsmen.
.......... on my Stanley chisels, British chisels and (text modified to suit) Stanley planes web pages.

Thanks James.
Decades ago I bought a bunch of tools and belt driven hobby machines and in the batch was a hand-cranked grinder that worked remarkably well. At least while one of the kids could hold out while my hands were busy.Cheers, Ern
