If you have patience, tip shop, garage sales, junk sales/auctions are your best bet.
If you are impatient or want metric then just apply $$$'s. Dieter Schmid is a reliable source and his assessments are fair.

You can get an adaptor to fit your old brace that will take these Wood Owl bits. I just bought a 1" from Taytools.com with the adaptor. They are pricey but work beautifully.

I was about to use my brace for hogging out my plane mortise and realized most of my bits were crap and ended up using the other cordless drill. I now know what to look for and won't buy anymore unless they are in great shape minus any rust. Disappointing.

Hi BP. I wouldn't worry too much about rust. I have used a citric acid bath (75grams to 750millilitres) to clean up auger bits and it works really well. Soak for about an hour and use coarse steel wool to clean off rust.
