If you trial out the 180mm length Vallorbe Needle Files, be prepared to be challenged on the file width commendation listed on the file chart for 10 - 12ppi. I cant recall what the exact width on the needle files is but you will need to bear in mind that the edges on these files come to an extremely sharp, so you do achieve some extra play on usable width.
Stewie, here is the table of widths as I understand them, there will be minor differences between makers, and probably over time by a maker. I have the same table in 32nd's of an inch if that is useful:

    File Width in mm (approx)
File Length Regular Slim Extra Slim Double-Extra Slim Three Square AP Three Square SP Three Square SP Narrow Needle Files
    3" 5.5 4 - - 4 140/3.3
    3½" 7 4.75 - - - 4.8 160/3.8
    4" 8.75 5.5 4.75 4 7 7.5 5.8 180/4.3
    4½" 10 6.5 5.5 4.5 200/4.4
    5" 10.5 7 5.5 4.75 8.3 6.7
    5½" 11 8 6.5 5.5
    6" 12 8.75 6.5 5.5 10 10.3 8.3
    7" 13.5 10.5 9 6.5
    8" 15 12 10.5 8 14 14.3 10.3
    10" 18.25 15 13.5 - 17 17.2 17.2
    12" 21.5 - - - 20 20.2 20.2

I had a look at 3 Square SP file prices at AJS - unbelievable! Probably why I don't have any.

The cost of shipping from the Us. to Aus. is always a prohibitive barrier to overcome, but if you can get a discount through buying 2 or more boxes its not so bad . The same can not be said on the final bids he's getting for his hand saws. Way above what I would be prepared to pay.
Your right, I guess I like to get a bargain, $6-7 a NOS file in box lots is pretty reasonable (they do go higher sometimes though - eternal vigilance...).

    Cheers

Hi Peter. As a general guide the scale you supplied is good enough for my purposes.

Default Vallorbe cut 4 needle file LA2407

    Hi Maestros,

Let me resurrect this ancient corpse of a conversation....

I've a 16tpi and 20tpi Veritas dovetail saw. These ones --> Veritas Dovetail & Crosscut Saws - Lee Valley Tools

Lovingly cared fro by their previous owner, but I'm wishing to give them a sharpen.

Reading through this thread, it appears I need to obtain the Vallorbe cut 4 needle file LA2407 as outlined in the chart above, perhaps in the form of a 3 Square SP.

    ??

I have absolutely no idea what these terms mean - but I can use Google with them

These would be the right thing? They seem mighty expensive....

If you can get a 4" DEST file, it should do for both your saws (certainly the 16tpi), but they are as hard to get, or harder than the needle files.

Funny you should put up this post today, I was searching for a cut 6 needle file yesterday & discovered they don't exist anywhere in Oz. I didn't find the OtoFrei site, so thanks for that - I wonder what postage from Germany is on a couple of files? I did find the ebay site you linked to. The prices are much the same as here, but did you notice the postage? I decided $Au73 is just a bit much to pay to post a needle file from the US...

I have no affiliation with Australian Jeweller's supplies, but they may be your best bet. And yes, it is the cut 4 you want, the others are too coarse for saw sharpening. They are cheaper by the dozen, but the Glardons will give you about 8-10 sharpenings per file (possibly more if you just do light touch-ups), so a couple of files will last you quite a while.

    Cheers,
    IW

Not too bad. I put 12 of the 160-4 Cut 4's in the cart, received a bulk discount, plus a further 5% off using the code (NEWFREI) and post is $23.78

Total $108.60, but no Australia Tax on that

I'll use the opportunity to look around and grabbing a few other trinkets before I order.

Default Do I hear the words "Group Buy"?

I'd be interested in a couple of them if you'd like to on-sell? Or add to your purchase and pay a proportionate share of the shipping cost?
