Well you see scrap metal dealers get brand new off cuts and there is nothing really wrong with them other than the companies they come from can't use whats left. Often they are as clean and unmarked as if bought from a main supplier.

What Wheelin' said makes perfect sense to me. If I was after 100+ ferrules, I would be thinking about making them - you'll pay a few dollars for the tubing whether you get it from a scrap dealer or a non-ferrous metal supplier. I had to make about twice that many handles last year, so I rigged up a simple jig to whack them off consistently & quickly. The cost was a few tens of cents per item, vs several dollars (at least) for the ready-made versions....

However, if you are bent on paying top dollar, I suggest you check Carbatec's catalogue....

I just think it's really sweet that they are caring tools ... not like those hard selfish bastards I have out in the garage.

If you read through the Plane Blades and Chisels ( A progress report ) thread then you'll be able to see what discussions they had about them and what they ended up doing.
    It's only 17 pages

Otherwise search 'ferrule' in the forum or google.

I used to buy ferrules from this crowd:

Specialising in fine hand tools and wood working books - The Wood Works Book & Tool Co.

They had a good range of sizes and prices to beat the competition.

I haven't checked whether that's still the case as the internet is crawling at the mo. Expect the landline pit is still full of water from Friday's 10cm.

Hmmm..... I started carving in 1963 and continued (off and on) until 2001. In my 38 odd years of carving, from my recollection, the only ferrule on the end of my carving tools was me... Oh, and a couple of my students.

Out of a few hundred genuine carving tools I have possessed over the years I can only recall a handful of them having ferrules (blade end only). They were mostly old English ones and a couple of massive Tyrolean sculpting gouges (can't even find any on the internet now).

I made a number of my own tools from old chisels and they had ferrules but other than that the vast majority of them here ferruless. Why???? No special reason. That's the way they came.

Turning tools on the other hand all had ferrules. Many made from brass or copper pipe off-cuts. Mostly because that's what was available at the time of making the handles.

    Cheers - Neil

    Default The Ferrules.

    Hi Dave & All,
I continue to make Handles for Chisels of all kinds.
I've cut up an Aluminum Chairs, about 25mm. also Chrome Railing from the Bathrooms about 16mm., Copper Pipe, & Brass, all around the same size.
Now, if you enclose them in Pin Jaws, you can Sq. the Ends, with a Gouge or Scraper, & it is very easy to do, & more satisfying to know you did them Yourself, & as the others said much cheaper.
    Regards,
    issatree.

Those handles had two ferrules, a tapered one at the pointy end and a parallel one at the stern. Which ones are you after? If it is the parallel style, send me a p.m. and we can discuss some options.
