So, to refer to this bit of the handle in future, shall we settle on "the ogee return from the lower horn, with (/without) a clip, and with (/without) a lamb's tongue"?

That should remove all ambiguity & give Paul's typing finger more exercise.....

    Ian,
That’s way to many words and stuff, can’t we just agree to call it the “Bit” [emoji6].

Decided the Jarrah I selected was a little thick. Approx 50mm so cut it down to around 30. Thought it would be a good chance to use recently purchase marking gauge from IanW and a hand saw from the great saw giveaway thread after a bit of a sharpen up.

Had taken about 20mins to get through the resaw rotating as I did and then planing the saw face to clean up. Next I'll use the drill press to cut out the internal corners

This is from a 1916 Simonds catalogue. Although the No.170 was offered in 10" and 12" lengths we should note that it only had 1½" under the back and an enclosed handle would have hung too low looking ungainly. It's use, particularly with 17ppi, would have been for small dovetail work or model making.

Paul, looks like Henry's Disston No. 70 (1918) was a copy of the Simonds No. 170 (1916)

    Disston Dovetail Saw.

Delbs, saw handles are typically between 22 & 24mm thick. I know you said you have large fists, but I suspect even you may find 30 on the thick side of comfortable. Or do you intend to give your planes a decent workout?

    Cheers,

    Cheers,
Ha yes i did measure an existing saw handle and saw it was around 24mm, i figured once ive finished filing and rasping it down it will be approx 30mm and ill try it out to see how it feels. i do want something thats really comfortable for me and i just get the feeling that i can wrap my fingers around and around some handles so bigger and thicker for this first one. then ill adjust for future handles based on feedback from use

On the other hand the large saws handle was very comfortable to rip that jarrah today. i just need to sharpen it again a bit better

    Cheers,
    Nathan

Although I used a template from TGIAG

Looking forward to your new handle. Let us know how you go.

Apologies for dredging up this old thread.

Does anyone have the TGIAG saw handle templates? I've searched online, but I was unsuccessful. I've got the Blackburn templates, but I wouldn't mind checking out the TGIAG, if someone still has them?

    Thanks!

P.S. Love this handle, Cklett. What wood is this?

Thanks. I am not sure what wood that is. Red Mystery Timber Probably some Eucalyptus. I do not even know anymore where I got that piece from. Some salvage yard...

That is sad that the TGIAG site doesn't work anymore. I found another link though where you can get templates: Saw handle templates | Craftsmanspace Only thing is they are all on same file, but they do look very similar to the TGIAG templates if I remember correctly. But I could be wrong. Not as convenient. I think I used the Diston #4 Backsaw template.

    Good luck

Thanks for the reply. Those files formats can be enlarged and printed, so they'll do the job. Thanks again!
