Hand Mitre box
Hi Guys,
I'm in the process of fitting out my man cave with quality hand tools and i think the next thing I want/need is a hand mitre saw/box.
I can see Lie Nielsen makes some nice custom saws but as well as a few others but I cant seem to find a nice enough box to do it justice.
Any hints?
Cheers,
Nick

You may like to look for one like this:
0007p6inj5qdh0dk.640x480.jpg
This is a Stanley 244.
There are others:
I think that they are something like these models:
246 346 358 360.
They come up from time to time at auctions and online old tool sales.
Google is your friend here.
Hope this helps

They sometimes come along on ebay, but it is often feast or famine there. I have seen times when there were numerous mitre boxes, and others when none appeared for months. Bear in mind that they are heavy items so postage will be expensive on top of your purchase price. Sometimes it is easier to contact a dealer and ask him to keep an eye out for you.
This bloke is one of the best in my experience.
Happy hunting

I recently sold a vintage Stanley #246 with saw for $175, which was a good price for the buyer since both were in excellent condition. One rarely finds these in Australia, and then only in very poor condition. This combination was replaced with one from Millers Falls, which is a superior design. For example, the saw runs on roller bearings rather than steel edge (as in the Stanley).
This is a #74C, which is a large model. The A, B, and C refers to the depth of the saw plate. Be aware of this if you search out one since if you get the box first and then order a saw from LN, the saw plate for a C is 5" - 5-1/2", while an A is 4-1/2". I discovered this the hard way - to my cost - and had to purchase another saw, as the saw plate I had (a very nice Disston) was only 4". The saw in the picture is a Disston made specifically for this saw box (a lucky find), and cost the same amount as the box.
If you want a small MF box, rather than a large one such as above, be aware also that they are rare and expensive as they are only available in the USA . The #74 is about USD$100 - $150 for the box in reasonable condition. Shipping is $$$ (the cast iron box is bloody heavy!).

Zillions in the US ... mitre saw in Tools, Hardware & Locks | eBay
But many only post to US addresses (can be worked around) ... and then there's the freight cost.

Nick,
I likely have one that could be yours depending on postage from Brisbane. I don't have a saw to sell with it though.
Send me a personal message and I can take some photos for you if you like - we'll see if we can work something out.
