hand plane repairs
I have an older model Stanley no4 hand plane which has the raised lug on the slew lever broken off. The lever is still rivetted to body. One thought that I have had is the drill the hollow rivet out and mig weld either a new tab on or build up a lump of weld on the end of the lever and refinish it. Would then have to turn up a new hollow rivet to refit the lever as space is tight.
Help. If anyone knows it will be Derek.

Standard 3/16" rivets replace the originals quite happily in all of mine, after I've finished and trued the frogface, both Stanleys & Pope Falcons.

I have just refurbished a record frog assemblt that was badly worn. I drilled the centre rivet out of the worn lug and also removed the rivet holding the lever to the frog so that I could work on the lever.
A new lug was mad from a piece sliced of the end of some 1/2" MS bar. It was reattached by riveting back on. I used a 2mm nail for the rivet and carefully peened (with a ball pein hammer) the ends over then filed flush to finish. To do this and ensure the rivet does not come out after filing flush, the hole needs a small chamfer for the rivet to be peened into.
The lever was reattached to the frog in a similar manner
