    Default hand planes

Ive just picked up 3 hand planes. 2 are Stanleys 1 is Record.
The Record and 1 Stanley are 4 and the other stanley 6 I think.

The prob is they are all in a box from a garage sale $5. and I dont know how to sharpen them set them up or if everything is there.

Iam looking for help from Adelaidians or there abouts how could help me preferably over the WWW show weekend. Renumiration will be easily arranged so that I can try, and see what the 'darkside' fuss is all about.

Anyone willing to come to the aid of the curious.

Oh yeah I could help you out a bit in my limited capabilities.

I'm good at sharpening but haven't done much so far as refurbishing planes goes. Don't mind helping out we should see what Zen is up to as he is our local darkside master.

There you go Tonto. Javali has a lot of experience with this stuff as his shed of raided planes from Garage sales proves.

You will have a top plane and learn a lot at the end of this.

What low rotten luck. How I dream to find one plane for a fiver, let alone three! You are doubly lucky in that you have some help on hand

Get them sweet and you will wonder what the noise is, the lack of high pitch screaming, wailing machine noise

have a look here you will find some stuff and a link to Major Drama's post on how to do up a plane. He is a real get it into concourse condition type of guy. Most of the rest of us do them just so they work and don't worry if they are pretty

Don't let it get you down, now. Just remember the whole point of the darkside is that its slow. Like slow food. Its not supposed to be instant. For now, you could probably just sharpen the ones you want to use, and flatten the sole and away you go. And then every now and then, you just polish up a bit as the mood takes you.

    Surely thats the Jedi way?

That Record 4 looks better than my user! And judging by the shine on the wood, I'd say its been well used, and probably recently. Just sharpen the blade and give it a go - see what happens. Then check the sole and sides are fairly square and flat. After that its mainly down to practice.

Good luck! Don't forget to let us know how it goes, and post pics when you've done some work on them.
    Cheers, Richard
