I have one of there 3" squares, an older model than what's shown. It is a beautiful tool & I use it heavily.

By the look if it John, you have the spokeshave set....... really, green is NOT my best colour

Major, no I have'nt got the Spokeshave/Travisher set it's something like over $400 US and I have'nt been able to justify that.
Initially I had intentions along that line however but have held off as tool expenditure was diverted (for the time being) on some Japanese Chisels from MIK in Adelaide.

I was looking thru my document files for a new avatar and the picture was appropriate to the BB.

    Cheers

    I'll tell ya sad story.

I got to know the lady who ran Garrett Wade Aust when it was up & running. She would look after me like there was no tomorrow, ring me up when there was specials on nice hand tools etc.

When I heard they were closing down I rang & had a chat to her about her job & what she was going to do after. I gave her my comiserations & thanks for all the help she afforded me over the short time they were trading.

She said just before I was going to hang up "I've got something special for you, how about a full set of Iori butt chisels for.......... $300.00"

Well, I just about passed out!!!! 12 chisles from 1.5mm to 42mm in a leather roll. I had them in my hot little hands in less than 24 hours.
    Cheers

MAJOR,that's the sort of good luck story I like to hear, however it's real sad that I also was'nt aware of the deals happening back them.

I have a reasonable rapport with Mike from MIK and I remember getting good prices thru their attendance here at a WW show in Perth (for the chisels) some years back but of course nothing like you experienced moreover for 12 chisels....I'm green with envy.

Did she give a reason for their closing down in OZ?
I suspect that the volume turnover didn't justify their presence or they found the market at that time too slow for their liking.

They were a good avenue for fine tools and with no disrespect to MIK would have off-set them or been another guide to access fine tools in OZ.

    Cheers

    Hi ya Major-General Sir!

That's a sad story? You lucky, well connected Mongrel!

Well done on an excellent deal: shame that G-W aren't here anymore, but with the changed ACS ruling, even with freight, they, like many other O/S suppliers, can be a good deal.

    Cheers!

    Hey John,

She indicated to me that the government was almost hostile towards the efforts of the Australian owner of the franchise to make the prices more viable (read less tax) for customers. Apparently the red tape was a full time job for the owner & in the end it wasn't going to get any easier so he just gave up.

I don't recall ALL the details that were afforded to me but I do remember it seemed to be very short sighted of the government, I mean a niche market company with international reputation being forced to close in Australia.

I guess if one was'nt cynical one might also wonder if pressure was'nt also brought to bear from those within the woodworking commercial fraternity.
But we'll never know now will we??

Competition is a healthy thing ,it keeps most reasonably honest.
