Thankyou very much for your replies.
Yes the problem is only with the 4 1/2. I think a camber might do the trick, i'll give that a shot and see how it goes.
I'll also try setting up with a bit of wood to make sure I get even shavings.

    Thanks again for your help

    Hi Andy

If the problem is only with the #4½, then the possible reason for your problem is that the #4½ is too short for it's width.
Do you need the width of the #4½ for the board you're working on?
Do you have a #4 or #5 that you could use instead?
    regards from Alberta, Canada

A 4 and half is perhaps a bit short to take out all the irregularities in a longer board
My age is still less than my number of posts

If, eg with a door, you can mark a line on each side that you want to get down to, then you can sight along from the ends - level with the work - to see how you are going ... where you need to take off more material, and where you need to ease up or avoid.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Well, spelling is not the forte of the younger generation, Toby, they consider other matters far more important. I've become immune after marking inumerable undergraduate exams......

Yes, I guess undergraduates become graduates, don't they. I used to moan about it, but it's not their fault - if you are not taught grammar & spelling it doesn't just happen, given our strange habit of writing so many words nothing like they are said. But cheer up, texting is bringing a hole nu dmnsn to splng. No1 wil no or cair in a fw mre yrs....

    Andy,

What is the width of the edge?

Some time ago my 11yo wanted to help me when I was building her a new computer/study desk.

She watched me edge joint 1 to 1.5m x 19mm boards with a No 5 and wanted to try.

Gave her my No4 ... It was a disaster ... had the same problem for the edge being straight but not 90 degrees to the face.

Was at a flea market the next day and got a No4 and did this mod for her. Jointing an edge was then achieved by her.

    Cheers,
You did mean "innumerable" I think.

Sorry, Ian. I couldn't resist. Marking too many exams has made me too pedantic.

What can I say? Forgot to use Spell Chequer.....

Good call, Tony - I think we've probably both marked too many, though fortunately, I think I've marked my last one......

    Cheers,

Hey Steve, thanks for your reply.
The edge is around 30mm thick, so plenty of surface area for the sole of the plane to register on. I think my next move will be to camber the iron and I'll see how I go from there.
I was fortunate enough to get a phone call from Ian (forum name ' ian ') 3 hours before I left Sydney on Sunday. He very kindly came around and gave me his fathers Stanley No 7. So hopefully this will make life easier when edge jointing, and the cambered iron will help when smoothing with my 4 1/2. I won't be able to report back until the end of the year, but thanks for those who helped

    Cheers,
    Andy
