The D-23 was a good saw towards the upper end of the Disston range. It was a model that endured for a very long time. Although first introduced in 1911 together with three other similar models yours is probably from the period jsu at after WW2 and before Disston sold out to HK Porter in 1955. Earlier models had Apple handles, but later on other non-descript hardwoods were used in conjunction with some coloured varnish or lacquer. The D-23 is one of the best user saws: Good steel and good durability.

This link will tell you quite a bit more and is the best reference in general for Disston handsaws.

Looking at the picture of The Sioux next to your D-23, the Sioux looks to be very tidy. I know what you mean about the handle size. I have small Iroquois and Pontiac saws and even the three fingered grip is too tight. mankind had gradually got bigger over the last hundred years so perhaps their hands did fit better than ours. Women and, more likely, children(males only) are a distinct possibility.
