Thread: Hand tool revival

Thanks to @NeilS for the Stanley 71 purchase recently. I picked up two Lee valley cutters for it and gave it a bath and some tongue oil on the handles after a sand.

Certainly think I need a small lathe again one day but for now happy that it cuts wonderfully and fully functioning. Now I just want more cutters

Also think it's fantastic I can be cutting and routing chiseling at 10pm and not bothering anyone compared to my 4hp C3 31 and 5hp dusty quiet peaceful

Hi D. Always nice to see tools returning to their former glory. The router plane is a wonderfully efficient thing, I would really miss mine if I had to give it up. I have a Record version and had to file down the height adjustment washer just a smidge to fit into the groove of the Veritas cutter.

Not convinced by the "slowing down" argument.

For small jobs, or is it most jobs, it is frequently faster to do it by hand, rather than spending all that time setting up and trialling a machine.

Ah yes of course. I should clarify that when I was last involved in woodwork it was ok the side of my primary job and things were very busy doing both with kids also. So whilst my job is still busy when I now do woodworking not for clients but for me with no machinery it's really peaceful and feels as if I've slowed down to appreciate it more in general

I agree 100% that instead of figuring out jigs and how to safely support bringing a large workpiece to a machine I can quickly select the right tool to the workpiece and get started. Something I immensely appreciate this time around

I've picked up a Stanley block plane and rebate 78 I'm currently cleaning up. Will post photos once cleaned up

Hi D. Is that a Carter? #6? On the top? What sort of vinegar did you use for cleaning the #45? Mine has some peeling nickel plating issues and wondering how best to tackle it

Yep it is a Carter no7. I couldn't find any decent Stanley no7s within my price range and the Carter came up. I'm about to put new chip breakers and blades in all three of my planes the no7, 5 and 4.

Just white vinegar soaked overnight. I read that bicarb soda helps so I added a bit of that also. I have just scrubbed with a wire rush and the attachments with the drill to clean off any marks before hand sanding on a flat surface.

I'm about to pick up the Jarrah to start making replacement totes and knobs for these planes as I'm not happy with the stability of one or two whilst planning.

The end of this I'll have a nice set of planes though that fit my hands properly and are a joy to use . That's the idea anyway

I understand the difficulties in getting a #7 (at a reasonableprice). I had given up until a fellow forum item came to the rescue with a lead on one. Now I have it I realise how handy (almost indispensable) they are. Funnily enough mine got a serious workout yesterday. I had a client egage me to make 3 hardwood bench tops and I was planning on getting them professionally sanded. This fell through and all 3 were done by hand. What a workout, I still ache this morning. But it was the 1st time I saw how well the plane flattened things out. Jarrah makes nice handles. I used it on my #5 to replace both

Oh what a great pic. This is exactly what Ill be making formally of mine. I picked up a few extra chip breakers and blades for the 5 and 7 last night and the Jarrah for handles today.

I've come to appreciate the 5 size it seems to fit me much more than using the 4 . I'll see how this is changed with new totes and handles as I want to make them pretty large like lie nielsons.

I really enjoy no7s also and have built work benches with them previously so I appreciate the job your doing now. Walk into the shed on a winter night plane a bench top for a few hours and come out sweating like a gym session ha

That's a fair effort to do all three by hand mate. A pic of any of them?

I hear you I've been recently enjoying hand tools sadly I need dusty & BS & other power tools body not as young as once was.

Here they are in the carport. Sorry I forgot to rotate phone to take picture. The shorter, wider one was done last and had a little attention from the electric plane and a mate (he worked on the undersides while I concentrated on the tops). Still need to sand out the epoxy and sand to finish ready. Did not quote enough for this!

Me, too. I am increasingly using a Lie Nielson low angle #5 as my "everything" plane. I rationalise that the longer sole makes up for my poorer technique.
