    Default Hand tool set

I'm an antique hand tool collector(or at least I try) and was wanting to know if there was a list somewhere or anyone knows what tools would constitute a set. I want to build a chest for them and am having trouble designing it around tools I don't have and I think knowing what I need will help with that.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Ryan

    Hello Ryan,
I suggest you check old catalogues, like Stanley, which detail several sets which were sold as complete chest & tool combinations. If you can't find them listed let me know & I'll see if I can scan an old catalogue for you.
    Regards, Bill

The local old tools group recently acquired a partialy complete tool box dating to about 1900. the following is entirely from memory ...
the box is about 30" wide, 16" deep and 24" high.
    it contains:
a partial set of hollow and rounds (possibly originally there was a full half set)
about a dozen wodden molding planes, mainly for window sash components
space for 4 saws, only the panel saw remains
mallet, but no chisels — I'd assume 3 or 4 mortise (starting at 1/8 and going to maybe 5/8), 2 or 3 firmers (starting at 5/8 or 3/4 and going to 1-1/2), and up to 5 or so bench/paring (including a 2" or bigger slick)
from the documents which were with the chest it looks as though the metal planes (#3, #5, #7, block) are missing
I suspect that the clamps are missing as well

but most interesting was the "non-tool" items like a couple of sets of mitre gauges intended to fit over a molding giving you a true 45° reference face to allow the molding to be accurately trimmed to 45°
