I see that you have a little bit more room in one of the draws.

Don't worry, Christos - it will either be filled with something in time, or disappear the next time I hve to remodel that drawer to accomodate the tool I didn't know I can't live without...

    Smile Bit of inspiration...

If you happen to be running low on inspiration or ideas, this fellow's blog shows his build for a hand tool storage cabinet.

wanted to get out to the shed again after just looking at the pictures for a few seconds

The shallow design spreads everything out, and makes it very easy to get at each tool. Too much 'waste' space for me - I have very limited wall area, so have to be more 'compact'.

    Cheers,
I think that the 'OCD' in me prefers ur design also Ian. What did I use for ur build, timber or laminated ply/MDF?

John, do you mean what did you use (that is, what did I use)?

If so, I used all solid wood (except for the marine-ply back & ply drawer bottoms)! MDF??? In my shed?? Wash yer mouth out sonny!

The box itself is mostly N.G Rosewood, salvaged from shorts & scraps left from milling up some rough billets a friend acquired many years ago (my reward for helping ). The front panels are spalted & blue-stained Mango, which was given to me by someone because it was 'spoiled'. (Don't anyone tell him...... ).

Inside bits are mostly Camphor laurel, except for drawer fronts. They are salvaged Silky Oak from a heap of drawers, originally fom the old Qld museum, which were chucked out after the move to the new location.

I think the ply cost me around $30 all up - everything else was 'free'....

    Cheers,
    IW

What about this one from this thread?

I think a row of drawers and an extra shelf underneath for planes would be good.

Nice pics of your storage Ian. I must say, i thought that was one of my drawers with all those allen keys.......they always seem to end up like that don't they! I know the OP was talking about converting a robe, but i am mulling over a slightly different idea.
I was going to make a mobile tool trolley, much like a mechanics, for hand tool storage. That way it can be moved around the workshop (ok, i know we don't all have that kind of space) to a convenient location for the work at hand. The top can be used as a timber trolley, somewhere to put your cutting list, and well, just another horizontal surface to put things on
Oh and how i wish there was no MDF or partical board in my shed.......the habits of being a cabinetmaker die hard....melamine is good for jigs though
