Handcutting dovetails - workshop in Perth
The idea was raised about a month ago whether we could put together a workshop on handcutting dovetails.
Let me hear from those who are interested in being involved, and we will make some plans to get it together. I am happy to host and run this. Others are also welcome to put up their hands if they wish.
Frankly it is just a good excuse for a get together, tell some lies and have a BBQ. Not sure how straight we will saw, or if we should trust Perry with a chisel after this
The thing is that workshop like this cannot cater for too many as it needs to be hands-on. Possibly 6-8 participants?
Ideas? Interest?

there could well be interest from an absolute beginner if it were possible to accomodate one. By beginner I mean real beginner.
60 year old who has never really held a tool in their life but could be very enthusisatic about the whole thing.
Let me know if this would be ok or if would rather be a intermediate workshop instead.
Wish I was in perth for this.....maybe I can see if there are any takers for one in Townsville or in the Sunshine coast.
Sorry ... I am not jacking this thread!!!

You are most welcome to attend!
You know what they say, "give me a 60 year's old brain for a day ..."

Perth huh?
Wouldn't you know it, I left Perth less than 6 months ago. I'd come along in a heartbeat if I was still there.
A great idea.

handcuttting dovetails
Derek, would love to be involved, one of my weak points. Can cut d/t with jigs but not by hand. Have a Incra and Woodrat, willing to bring the Woodrat if wanted. Cant do Saturday but any Sunday is fine.

Dovetail cutting
Hello Derek,
I would like to attend, cutting dovetails by hand is something I also have been wanting to give a go.

Will the participants need to bring tools and wood?

Tools and wood?
It would make sense to bring your own dovetail saw. We can always tune it up - not resharpen it as there is not the time for that, but removing excess set if it is not cutting straight is doable.
I also have a bunch of my own saws that all are welcome to try out, which will give you an idea of what a decent saw feels and cuts like. I have both Western and Eastern saws.
Wood? Well Pine is cheap and good to practice on. I can supply some of that. Pine is not an easy wood to cut cleanly - your chisel must be sharp - so will highlight any faults in technique. Bring your own wood if you want to build a box in something special. The one criteria about wood is that it must be thicknessed evenly.
Chisels? Bring your own. This is a chance to sharpen them well and to check that you do so. We will go through setting up chisels. I also have some of my own that others can try out.
Ditto mallets/hammers.

Hi Derek,
Yahoo !!! Another BBQ at Derek’s Workshop, and an occasion to bring an ale or two or vino perhaps. What could be better?
Oh yes, some instruction / practice on the handcut dovetail. Mine vacillate between agricultural and artistic, never quite making it to the aesthetically pleasing spectrum. So some guidance to the process would not go astray, (before BBQ and beverages is definitely the safer option for me and sharp things).
Am free Saturday 27 or Sunday 28 June, or the following weekend, July 3/4. Either a Saturday or a Sunday is also fine with me. Will go with whatever is convenient for you Derek and for the others attending. If a weekend before the 27th is best for all then no problem, have fun, and I will catch you at the next workshop gathering down the track.
Cheers
Pops
