Default New handle for a Bailey No 5

I am after another handle for my Bailey No 5 plane. The original broke some time back, like 50 years back, It was replaced by an aluminium QPC handle that gave up the ghost two weeks ago. The plane was part of my apprenticeship allocation. I am not concerned about appearance too much, but it needs to be solid, I still use hand tools..

    Would appreciate any help.

    Jim,

I wrote a blog post about retro fitting my Stanley with an Veritas style tote earlier this year at Making a Veritas style tote for my Stanley #4 plane – Lance's Workbench.

I really like the lower angled holding position it offers, and if I had to make another, it would be the veritas style, so may be worth considering.

Thanks Ray, I was hoping to save some time by not having to make new handle. The new handle won't be segmented but could be a good project for some laminating.

    Thanks for the offer

Thanks Lance for the offer, I will have a look at your blog. No point in re-inventing the wheel is there??

You lazy buggar, retired and still looking for the easy way out. Seeing your broken aluminium tote prompted me to check and tighten the totes on my Stanley hand planes when I got home. Ive got a bitsa #5 with a plastic tote you can canabalize if you will stoop to using plastic.

I've got a few spares kicking around that will fit a #5 and you are welcome to one of those. They aren't 'originals', but a lot nicer to hold than a chunk of cold metal! PM me with an address & I'll send it to you.

    Cheers,
    IW

If all else fails, I have a QPC handle in a drawer somewhere that you can have. I took it off a plane that I inherited from my FIL and replaced it with a wooden one.
GPC stands for Quality Patterns and Castings who were in West Brunswick, Melbourne. There is a fair chance that my father carted the aluminium for it as he was a truck driver for the firm that supplied all the aluminium ingots to QPC. Just a bit of trivia.

You know what you can do with the plastic bit, and without Vaseline too.

Thanks for the offer Tom, much appreciated, but I think I have the problem sorted.
