    Default Saw Handle/Blade Holes

A little while ago I had to spend some time here:
    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f152/h...ml#post1508167
to figure out which blade went with which handle ... the number of holes wasn't a simple match
... and one hole breaks out on the edge of the blade.

Then I saw this one recently:
    Winsor Saw dovetail saw sharpening

I haven't had the handles off many of mine ... and they've always matched ... wonder if there would ever be extra holes in the blade when they left factory.

Yes, I've seen several saws with extra holes, Wheeler, Madden & Clemson is a good example, with two extras that are about one size smaller than the others. And you will sometimes see 'notches' along the edge of the blade under the handle, like on an Atkins. There doesn't appear to be any documentation to explain these things, but the speculation is that it was for holding the blade during the tapering/grinding of the blade.

And look here for a Wheeler, Madden & Clemson.

P.S. But sometimes a saw has been re-handled and will have extra holes where the old handle was. Even if you swap the handles on two identical vintage saws, the holes will not match.

    Good point about the grinding.
    The #12 above has a notch ...

Also ... from the pictures of the three saws ... the plain handle has 5 holes, but seems there's only 3 in the blade.

On at least three occasions that I can recall, I have come across back saws with extra holes. In each case they were rough, not cleanly-punched like in your pics. I assumed in thse cases that the handle had been refitted from another saw by a previous owner......

    Cheers,
