Default A New Handle From Veritas

There has been a lot of comment over the years about Veritas plane handles. There appear to be two schools of thought on these upright style handles - like them or hate them.
Many people prefer the curvaceous Lie Nielsen classical shape and feel, while others point to how much easier the Veritas handle feels when used on an elevated bench.
Well, whatever your point of view, it seems Lee Valley have decided to lean towards curving the old handle a little bit.
Looks a bit less angular now and might win over some friends from the Lie Nielsen camp.
Oh yes - there is a new plane to go with it.
A number 3 sized low angle smoother.

    Cheers

    Default Confusing classifications

Hmm. They don't seem to be able to get any consistency in their plane naming system for their bevel-up/low angle planes. Up until now, if they're called Low Angle (LAJ, LAS) they have flat sides for shuting, whereas if they're called Bevel Up (BUS, BUJ), they've got curved sides.

But this new one breaks even that confusing classification....

...and they've introduced yet another blade size. Like, why didn't they make it 3mm narrower and use the block plane blade?

And I'm still waiting to see their next product with the NX/DX classification.

Still, it's good to see the recession hasn't stopped the introduction of new models.

I agree with Vann again, the Veritas nomenclature for these planes is incredibly confusing and needs a serious review.

Also confusing is the mysterious absence of the Low Angle Smoother (but inclusion of the low angle jack) from the list of bevel up planes on the lee valley website.

You can really see why Stanley just numbered everything, made life alot simpler.

Getting back to the handle style it just looks like they have taken the handle from the plow plane/ skew rebate plane. It attaches with a screw from the bottom so its not going to be an update for the entire line, just specific to this model.

Finally I too am more keen to see the next plane in the NX/DX series, they were a very cool appetiser and they have been saying that the next one is going to be radically different from anything bailey school of thought.

But this new one breaks even that confusing classification....

To add something more confusing: Shouldn't it be in the small plane familiy?
Planes - Lee Valley Tools - Woodworking Tools, Gardening Tools, Hardware Supplies

Or in the smoothimg plane familiy?

Smooth Planes - Lee Valley Tools - Woodworking Tools, Gardening Tools, Hardware Supplies

And why is the Low Angle Jack part of the Bevel up familiy but not the low Angle Smoother?

Veritas® Bevel-Up Planes - Lee Valley Tools - Woodworking Tools, Gardening Tools, Hardware Supplies

Now the solution is simple: This questions keep customers from asking the really important question:

Why on earth is there a Jointing Plane with rounded sides? They should give a free straight edge with every single one.

    Cheers
Pedder (who has about 5 Veritas planes and a straight edge and loves every single one.)

    Geez - everyone's a critic....

In this year's main catalogue letter I come clean on how this plane came to be....

We actually made it for the daughter of one of our staff - our working name was the "Charlotte" plane. Of course, we were worried that the beer swilling barbie operating types down under would eschew a tool "made for a girl"... so had to find some other non-gender threatening context to place it in.......

So - now that you know the truth..... let me say that this is really a sweet plane... right-sized for a lot of work - sitting between a block plane, and a #4. If you've ever used our block plane with the vertical tote - then you know how useful it is. Box makers love it...

And no.... we won't make it in pink.

    Cheers -

    Rob

PS to Pedder - Yes - the website nav for the planes is bit of a dog's breakfast... it's been re-worked, and should be updated later this fall. I, too, have a hard time figuring out where things are...!

Actually I think the handle looks more comfortable than those on the earlier plane designs. The plane will no doubt be extremely well made as well.
    Good luck with this one.

    Dear Rob,

please don't waste any worktime on the website but introduce a flat sided jointer and some more DX planes, will you?

    Cheers Pedder
