Stanley #42 saw set
Hi all. Just received my "new" saw set from eBay. Nice and solid, comfortable action and hammer in good nick. But I couldn't quite see how the adjustment mechanism worked and comparing mine with images on the internet, I can see that mine has had both the adjustment screw and the locking bolt replaced. Does anyone have any spare they are willing to part with? I can't complain too much, cost was only $10 pp but a little disappointing. A learning experience and I know it's a bit cheeky to ask.

Me again. Just noticed a date stamped in the top of the tool. Does anyone know if this is common? Looks like 12-19-16. Would this make sense?

Hi Mountain Ash,
Christian Bodmer was a prolific designer of various tools for the Stanley Rule & Level Co. The date of your saw set, 19 Dec 1916 coincides with a design patent USD50055, of his. Prior to this he had a patent granted on 26 Sept 1916 for a saw set (US1,199,232) and another on 17 May 1921 (US1,378,650).
If you want to look these up go to Google patents, enter the patent number in the search box like this: USD50055 and click on the Q in the blue box. This will lead to a new page, click on "Download PDF" and there is the original patent drawing and description.
Apologies to those of you who are tech giants for the neanderthalic directions for the above but that is how it would need to have been explained to me originally.
Cheers,
Geoff.

Hi Geoff. Best way to explain it to me also. So that means its 100 YO then? Wow!

MA, there are different 42s. The 42W is for panel saws and the 42X is for back saws. All may be modified. Your 42 is not an exceptional or special model.
I do not know if your 42 has spares. I rather doubt it. The simplest solution is to request a return to the Seller, get your money back, and purchase a complete version.

Hi Derek. I think the replaced bits were probably the reason why it wasn't priced higher (I saw one for $80). I thought I snaffled a bargain because it was advertised by function rather than brand. It works, just not as easy as it could be to adjust.

Hi MA
I'd agree with Derek, try to get a refund.
The Eclipse #77 is a good saw set for all of the larger ppi you mentioned
you could get two and file the tip for smaller ppi.
Most of the #77's I see at swap meets sell for about $15

Hi all. Update on the saw set. I have been in contact with the seller, who has generously refunded me the $10. Still on the lookout for some alternative screws

MA
Don't go parting with vast sums of money. I will check when I get home tonight. I have quite a few saw sets, but I am not a collector of saws sets! They have simply accumulated. Don't know how that happened.
