    Default Handsaw Vibration

    Good Morning All

My Sandvik cross-cut saw has just developed strong vibration on the back stroke.

I would really appreciate any advice on the cause and remedy for this complaint.

    Cheers

    Graeme

Is there a kink in the blade?

Perhaps it needs more set. Has it been sharpened of late and if so was it set also?
Are the handle screws loose. Thats about all I can think of.

many reasons why it may vibrate and without physically seeing it then it is hard to give an answer, have you lost a tooth, have you bent it, have you had it sharpened lately, did he set it correctly or use the wrong size file or unevenly sharpen it? too many maybe's to give a definitive answer

Good morning Dave, Jim, John & All

There is no kink or bend in the saw, it has not been sharpened or reset recently, and there are no missing teeth.

The screws were loose and the vibration started just after I tightened them. Perhaps a link there??

Otherwise nothing has changed in the saw, that I am aware of. Does this help?

    Cheers

well maybe a clue in there, what if you loosen the screws again does the vibration cease, if that is the case I suspect a "warping" of the blade being induced by a misalignment of the handle relief, all I can think of for the time being?

    Thanks Dave

After my last post that also dawned on me and I loosened and re-tightened the screws - about a 30 - 40% of the vibration went away. A friend suggested I put some wax polish on the blade - another 30% went away. Still some vibration but no where near as much as before.

I had not used that saw for about a year, and on close inspection it is seriously blunt - this could account for the remaining vibration. Sharpen and re-set...

It really intrigued me - I had never had vibration like this in a handsaw before.

    Cheers

    Graeme
