Carter plane question
I have recently acquired a Carter #54 plough plane. I haven't been able to find much about Carter on the internet. Can anyone give me any more info on Carter, and on the #54 in particular? I know the Stanley #54s are quite rare, and didn't know if the Carter was the same. Did Carter make a lot of different Stanley workalikes, or were they limited in the types of planes that they manufactured?
Thanks,
John Meikrantz

Thanks for the link. I have the blue one, with the box, instructions and cutter set. It seems well made, with some rough spots on the casting. I would still like more info on Carter, and the rarity of some of their planes.

I have a #4 Carter that I cleaned, sharpened and set and the old beast planes very well. Nice thin , even shavings with no chatter or bad manners.
When I first saw it I was unimpressed by the poor quality casting and finish but now keep it on the bench as a user, beside the bedrocks. It does the job well.
I think they should be more appreciated, used & collected than they appear to be.
Good luck with yours, Bill

I got a Carter #5 bench plane, with some other tools yesturday. The Carter seems like a nice plane, but it needs the rear handle reglued( crack at the base), and good clean up.

I've got a Carter no.7, it was given to me by my father. Not sure of it's age (the plane that is !)
Read on the htpaa website that the build quality was a bit hit and miss, although mine seems ok I've never used another brand jointer.

I've got a complete #71 that's finished as well as a Stanley, and a #78 that must have been poured 7am Monday or 3.30pm Friday, rough as guts but it's only cosmetic.

Hi John,
Trevor Semmens Book on Australian Woodworking planemakers has I think what you may be after, at least it has about 5 pages detailing all the models and differences that there were in Carter planes and other Aussie makers. The HTPAA site also has good info and I think there may be a copy of the book for sale on Hans Brunners web site.
Regards,
Steve
