    Default Heavy Duty Casters

    G'day Gals and Gents:

I'm trying to find some very heavy duty casters to use under a thicknesser-planer that weighs in at around 1000kg.

I guy in the USA suggested I get some Zambus casters (www.zambus.com). They sure look great but short of getting Zambus to post them over to me, I will need to find an equivalent here.

Any suggestions as to brands? The Zambus ones have levelling rubber feet integrated into the design.

    Thanks for any responses!
    Warm Regards, Luckyduck

as far as I know, there is only one reputable company in aus that makes top quality castors.

This is probably what you would need. As well as these floor locks.

They also have a 5 year warranty on the fork and a 3 year on the wheels.

Try contacting them directly, as the distributors rarely respond to emails.

Or try these (available from Pauls in Sydney):
    www.rotarolawheel.com.au

Although these may not have enough load bearing capacity for 1000 kg

So how does the capacity work out.

If you have a 500kg machine on 4 wheels does that mean all 4 must be rated at 500kg (or more) or say 125kg each ?

If you know for sure that your weight is 500kg, then yes 4 wheels rated at 125kg. Although they usually under rate the kg, its still always best to add a little to the support rating.

To support 1000kg, you would need 4 castors rated at 250kg.

Care needs to be taken also when mounting the castors (the whole plate supported) DAMHIKT.

I'm making a mobile base at the moment for my jointer, and its going to end up looking like a tank . The castors I have are rated to support 320kg and are total brake. I hope its enough.

When they eventually fail, I have made the mounts so that I can bolt on some heavy duty Fallshaws.

Yep, hopefully will finish it tomorrow.

Just spent 2 hours trying to work how to print a scale drawing from SketchUp for the mounting points of a Fallshaw castor plate.
For anyone that cares, you need SketchUp 6 to print to scale. Version 5 wont do it.

Try a PM to 'Soundman' - he has some contacts who have previously offered HD casters & mobile bases.

LuckyDuck, you'll find all the castors you could ever need at Handi-Cart Trolley Centre, 190 Albion Road Windsor.

    www.handicart.com.au

There's also Richmond Castors at Albion, and every industrial bearings supplier and many auto parts places carry a range of castors and can order in those not stocked.
I'd still suggest you make Handi-Cart your first port of call.

Edit: Richmond Castors are now at Salisbury, 1/121 Evans Road

Do Handicart have a warranty on their castors?

Have you considered getting a pallet jack? I got one from super cheap auto (on special) for about $200, lifts and shifts up to 2500kg and is not limited to just the one machine. You just need to put some packers (80mm) under each machine you want to move with it.

Careful there Martrix - very few shed floors are so flat that the machine isn't resting on just 2 diagonally opposite wheels at some stage. I'm just in the process of upgrading some of mine 'cos they just groan too much on some sections of the floor. Worth a thought!

Amen, TTIT. Although "capacity" is well shy of breaking load, that's only for occasional overload. Best to assume support by only two wheels for maximum lifetime.

Both very good points and something I had not considered. Duly noted ..
