Help- compass plane identification
Can anyone help, please. I have a compass plane (circular plane) and I cannot work out what make or year of manufacture. It weighs 1.45KG (about 3.2 pounds), is 10inches (255mm) long, width sole 2 2/5 inches ( 60MM ), blade width 1 3/4 inches (43mm). Blade is 7 1/4 inches long. Blade is marked "BALDWIN TOOL made from cast steel WARRANTED". Apparently Baldwin made plane blades in the USA but not planes. Blade is held in place by a boxwood wedge.
Any help to identify this plane would be greatly appreciated.

The body looks very much like an 'Evans Patent Plane' , missing it's blade holder and thumbscrew.
They were made in the late 1800's at a couple of places in America. Some of them had a largish medallion on the side.
I purchased one a while ago from the bay as a gift for my FIL who's a restorer. It had a Moulson tapered iron.
There seems to be scant information on line about this type. I was able to view the original patent information, and bits and pieces of information from previous sales.
I'll see if I can dig up some of the links I found.

A bit more info...
George F Evans of Norway filed the patent in 1862 (No 34,248) and in 1864 (No 41,983).
You can look these up.
Most were made by R H Mitchell & Co in Hudson NY, but some were made by Darling & Schwartz in Bangor Maine.
Mitchell and Co soldered a brass nameplate to the side, but some were sold with paper labels.
I read somewhere (can't find the link now ) that they were all manufactured pre 1900.
