Default Help to Identify this plane.

    Hi,

When I had the glass out, I picked up the mitre planes
and realised how heavy they are. I took ONLY one photo of
of them. The one on the left is made by Spiers and is 7" long.
The middle one is 9 1/2" long but no makers name. The one
on the right is made by Robert Towell and is 10 1/2" long. Now
that one is heavy, and would be tiring to use. The Spiers 7 "
would be nice to use for me.

Yes, a bit of heft seems to be a requirement for those earlier models, which should be another clue to what they were used for. While I like Joel's hypothesis it remains an hypothesis unless & until someone finds a reliable old manual or description which describes unequivocally what they were doing with them in 1750....

    Cheers,

PS. Towell was one of the very earliest recognised infill makers, so I think you've likely got something worth a few shillings there. Better use armoured glass on that pane, & screw it down very securely......
