help needed to identify stanley plane
recently bought a stanley no. 6 plane (works a treat - thanks Scribbly Gum ) and a couple of things about it have made me wonder just how old the thing is. i'll try to be as descriptive as possible, will try to post pics in the next few days when i bring it home from work
IRON: laminated blade stamped "STANLEY" in notched rectangle and "made in england", sharp corners at top
HANDLES: stained beech
CASTING MARKS: bailey at toe, made in england between knob and mouth and no.6 behind tote, from memory the casting is about 4-5 mm thick on cheeks
LEVER CAP: hollow at back and has kidney shaped hole with rectangular spring
BLADE ADJUSTMENT: brass depth knob with 2 grooves and 90 degree knurling, lat. ajd. vertically stamped "stanley"
hope someone out there can help *nudge* derek
thanks in advance

Hi Elan,
You won't have any luck dating your english plane on those type studies as you have discovered. Little info is available on dating english made stanley planes. However there are few things. Is the blade original? any chance of a pic?
At a reasonable guess without seeing your plane I'd say it would date from late 1950's to 1960's. Stanley bought out titan late 60's? and made stanley planes in hobart though english made planes may still have been imported. Handles changed to plastic later on also not sure exactly when that happened- probably late 70s -early 80s. Earlier Enlish stanleys also had the top of the blade with sharper corners, later production had more rounded shape on the blade. The adjustment yoke also went through some changes nickel plated late 50's, jappanned yoke came in the 60's I think, then it change to a two piece pressed metal yoke.
Regards,
Steve
