    Hi PM

I don't see the issue to be one of BU versus BD design merits - discussing "bevel, & clearance angles" will simply take you into a blind alley.

A preference for a BD design here should not be interpreted to be support for BD planes generally. I have built a number of planes from each format. I own and use plenty of each type. In fact I have contributed to the development of several BU planes for Lee Valley. The single reason why a BD plane is really the only real contender is that a BU woodie will be unlikely to survive long as its construction has an inherent weakness: the thin bed.

    Regards from Perth

That certainly hasn't been my experience with these irons Skew. I've just built a 60 degree panel plane from Ironbark with one of Helmuts D2 irons and there is no chance of any chatter... ever! If this is one of the concerns prompting you to go BU, you can safely discount this problem.

The risk of chatter is centred purely on how well the iron is bedded and how well the wedge is engaged. Moreover, this is a greater problem in very hard timbers like Ironwood and Ironbark. You will find that once these problems have been sorted chatter will completely disappear.
