Hnt jack plane setup
Hey everyone HNT plane users
Just received the jack plane from another forum member here and getting it setup for the first time
Beautiful plane and really one of the nicest pieces in my workshop, definitely looking forward to all the other stock coming my way once it's setup
I've followed the videos ive discovered and instructions on how to set up the blade and wedge, but with each attempt to make some shavings the blade slides back in the mouth because the wedge isn't holding it in place.
I'm big enough that I've never really been known to be the most gentle of people so I feel my tap of the wedge is sufficient to not damage it and should hold it in, but obviously not. The videos I see online I don't see them bashing the wedge in so is there possibly something else going on I'm not aware of?
Swelling or shrinkage in the wedge perhaps? It doesn't look damaged or anything obvious but I'm happy to post photos if need be. Just after some pointers.
I have reached out to hnt but only just today via email so am not expecting a super quick reply.
Thanks all
Nathan

Terry has responded very quickly to all my emails in the past so I'm sure he'll have a solution for you shortly.

I have not had the pleasure of using any of the HNT Gordon planes but I made a plane with a similar wedge holding method. As you have followed the setup video then I would check the blade, wedge & frog are not slipping due to wax or oil. A clean up wont hurt while you wait for a reply.
Regards
John

I have one of the HNT smoothers in Cooktown Ironwood, never had a problem with the blade moving once the wedge is tapped home.
I would also be checking there is no buildup of wax or oil between the blade and the plane body, maybe there’s a high spot that’s preventing a good contact.Brad.

I Have also owned a HNT smoother for maybe 20 years, still have the receipt somewhere.sometimes the blade finds the perfect spot first time , other times it takes several attempts to set correctly,, follow the online instructions or if you have the printed instructions just as well. I doubt there is anything wrong with the wedge, the mouth is super tight so it must be set up for a very fine shaving.Used mine yesterday, it worked perfectly on a wide laminated board with one very nasty hardwood and multiple grain directions, sometimes i dont use it for months and reach for iron planes , but still very handy when needed,Ross

Thanks for the replies. I did hear back from him. He suggested to wipe the wedge and blade and bed of the plane with method incase it had some finishing residue left over.
I wiped it all down pretty thoroughly and made some cuts on a small iron bark off cut and it came up real nice.
The blade did move from where I first tapped it into place but held in enough to make fine shavings and cleaned it up.
I'm confident if I clean it again even a few times if need be I'll be able to produce some nice shavings from now on
Super impressed with the quality of this plane. Definitely has me looking around on their website for the next one

To revise, upon using the HNT smoother today with the usual setting the blade problem, well what is wrong? , although very sharp the leading edge was not square to the sides due to sloppy grinding and honing, sorted that out and its planing super thin shavings after the first blade setting tap, so it was a user problem , thanks Ross

Kind oh happy to read this
I was having unexpected issues with mu hnt shoulder plane. If was great when I received it. I was using it to cut a rebate and had issues. It turned out the issues were all mine. I sharpened the blade in my inexperienced way. The blade was sharp but the edges were not square.
It will take some work to fix my blade, I can see with my failing eyesight it is not close to square, but I am up to the challenge to restore what was a great plane.

I've cleaned up the blade by hand on some 1500 wet and dry on a granite stone and then some Veritas honing paste on leather strop
It started to cut pretty nice just on some Oregon I was cleaning up.
When I encounter going against the grain the blade is pushed out , I give it a tap on the blade and the wedge (few more taps) go with the grain and get some fantastic cuts but eventually the blade is still pushed back flush with the body to where it doesn't cut anymore
So I quickly touch up the blade again and then put it all back together and able to make 10+ cuts that are super nice before the blades pushed out again.
I shouldn't need to touch up a hss blade this frequently when I'm planing Oregon right? I'm not saying the blade is super dull I'm just making cuts until the blade starts pushing out again.
Happy to admit this is user error or my sharpening system ain't that great but I'm just not clear on why the wedge isn't holding it in, if a Stanley or another blade is a little dull ull notice but obviously it's locked in and you push harder to finish the cut, is it normal for hnt to just come loose of the blade dulls?
I'm in contact with Terry and he's very helpful and I'm confident we will get to the bottom of this. Just wanted to share in here for other perspectives from more experienced HNT owners

Was identified by Terry that the wedge was hitting up against the brass infill in the mouth so I've had it sent back as he said he can fix it up under warranty. Amazing customer service. Even with a semi loose wedge was pretty impressed with the cuts so can't wait to have it fully functioning
Eyeing off their jointer plane. It's a dangerous website to visit

Just wanted to let you all know I have just received the jack plane back from HNT. I have been planing the face of every scrap bit of can find just as I'm in awe of how fine it produces shavings.
Terry fixed the wedge, sharpened the blade and gave me some feedback and even threw in a mallet . Amazing customer service
Have been thinking of a spoke shave to help with my Jarrah plane handles so a small HNT might he on the cards if the same quality can be expected tomatch this plane.

My favourite tool is my large curved HNT spokeshave. I find it very quick to setup easy to control. I also have the small version but never really use it.
