    Default HNT spokeshave

I'm considering getting an HNT spokeshave as part of the current group buy.

On checking Terry's webpage, I note that the design of his full-size spokeshaves seems to have changed substantially from the original version

HNT Gordon and Co Classic Plane Makers Australia

Since I won't be able to check one of these out at a WWW show before the group buy closes, I thought I'd see if anyone actually has an example of this newer style shave. Looks a bit more svelte than the previous design, but does it work as well???

    Cheers

I had a chance to play with the new ones at the Melbourne mini wood show at
Boxhill a little while ago. The short answer is yes they work every bit as well. They are a little smaller in every way but make up for that with "better" performance overall. Terry feels that they are even less prone to chatter than the previous designs. They came about as an off shoot of the development work done on the very small luthier spoke shave. Terry is still very active in refining his production processes and enhancing the performance of the tools.
I've yet to fork out the dollars for the new versions of the flat and curved spoke shaves but will soon enough. Its hard to justify given how well the older design works.
    I hope this helps.

I bought one of Terry's small curved sole spokeshaves about 12 months ago, as the blade on my small traditional boxwood shave had reached the end of its life.

Terry's shave is now my go to shave for work in restricted areas, and for the last few cuts on both curved and flat work to produce that nice glossy finish.

It is a sensitive tool as the shavings are only a few thou thick, and is therefore not something you would use for hogging off a lot of wood. it is a brilliant tool and I would be sure the larger versions are just as good.

    Regards
