Ahh yes of course, M2 is HSS so you can take to red heat and as blue as you like and it does nothing but not really with A2 or D2 and even less so with O1.
I've also tried using a fine kerf blade but it's too flexible and not precise enough to cut shallow angles on thin stock. Maybe you can do better than I can.

Just out of interest I found this info at Sauer and Steiner about a new generation of low heat grinding stones by norton.
That can be placed in a high speed grinder with little risk of blueing the metal.

The blades where delivered to Rippon Grinding today. I asked to see a sample of what the finish grind would look like and it was very good, the same finish that you see on the HNT Gordon plane blades. I will get an email in two weeks which is around the 4th of December 2007 to confirm that it is ready for pickup.
Remember if you do not have the capacity to grind a primary bevel in 60-62 Rc. PM me so I can do it for you.
I got to meet Michael from Rippon Grinding, and to look at the company setup they have been around for over 50 years and seems to be held in high regard in the industry. While they cost a little bit more I am now more confident that they will do a good job and the few extra dollars is well spent.
Cheers

20th November 2007, 04:21 PM #80I have access to a buffing wheel with some veritas green rouge on it. I will give the blades a quick lick and polish on the buffing wheel and it should come up very nice.
Thanks for the thought but I'd rather that you did not do this to mine. There is a risk when polishing that an edge or a back gets rounded over. Then one has to remove steel to flatten it all over again. Best left as is.
Thanks again.

I contacted Rippon Grinding today and they say that blades will be finished this Friday. I have arranged to pickup on Tuesday as this is the earliest I can make it down to Dandenong for the day.
I will post back on Tuesday with photos.

I managed to get to Dandenong today to pick up the D2 blades from rippon grinding.
All I can say is they have done an excellent job , the ground finish is smoother and less ripely then that on the finished blades that came with my HNT Smoother. I have put up the blade against a Veritas straight edge, and a strong light source but the blades are dead flat with no gaps.
I am also able to place water between two blades and they will stick together just on surface tension alone, way cool.
I started to hone a mirror finish on the back on my 4 blades. I started with some 220 grit wet and dry and with in one minute I had a uniform scratch patter on the back with no sign of a convex or concave surface. I have taken it to 1000 grit and have a mirror finish, within 10 minutes.
I hope to grind a 30º primary bevel on at least one blade and will get back to you to see how long it takes.
I hope to maybe possible take some shaving with the blade today by fitting a blade into one of my HNT planes, it will be a snug fit.
I will post photos as soon as my camera battery is recharged up again.

Here are the photos.
Photo No. 01 is the little box it came smelling like WD40.
Attachment 61838
Photo No. 02 is all the blades stack up. You can see that the ends are still covered in black oxide, as this will form the you know what.
Attachment 61849
Photo No. 03 is a side view of the blade, most look like this a few could use a little clean on a stone, regardless this has not effect on the blades performance. The sides are nice and square.
Attachment 61840
Photo No. 04 top/bottom face, those scratches are just smudges from the WD40.
Attachment 61841
Photo No. 05 this is the cool trick two blades are holding together by nothing but a little water and surface tension.
Attachment 61842
Photo No. 06 here I have ground the basic angle on the angle grinder, D2 is sweet, you can really abuse it and it will not blue. Still use water to cool regularly, no use tacking chances. This was my first attempt at grinding a primary bevel, it took me about 15 to get it to this stage, another 5 minutes on the grinder and I will have my primary bevel.
Photo No. 07 The final photo is of the back of the blade brought to a near mirror finish on 600 grit wet and dry. Flat straight across with no convex or concave surface in sight.

So that is it. All needs to happen is those picking up to pick up, most people are collecting theirs on the 5th at the BBQ at kmanz place, and Bobl will be collecting for the WA crowd on the same day. If you are a postal please PM so I can send it to you.
Groogy you can have yours early when we meet up at the Xmas turnfest at DJ's place.
*NOTE* If you cannot grind a primary bevel please remind me and I can do it for you. You will have to wait a little longer as I get to doing yours.
