    Default IanW in print again

For those of you who have not yet received their copy of AWR (No.91), IanW has an excellent article on choosing back saws. The highlight for me is seeing again his own saws and tool cabinets.

Well worth a read and thanks Ian.

Just as well I don't try to stay incognito, Paul! No chance with my ugly mug all over the page. The editor likes habitat shots of authors, to go with the articles, so she came over one day & took a whole bunch of pics of me in my shed. My better half insisted I put on a clean shirt this time, even though I assured her no one would even notice, let alone care. But I got one of those looks, so clean shirt it was. I see the tool cupboard sneaked in there, too. Doesn't have any relevance to the article, but everyone who visits seems to like exploring it....

Linda asked me at the Carbatec do last weekend if I'd had any feedback, positive or negative, so fire away. I hope a few people might find it useful, of course, but it's pretty basic. You are only allowed a certain number of words for a single article, so you can't get too carried away. Which is no doubt intentional.
    Cheers,

Well done Ian. Havent had a chance to read the story yet, but the pictures looked great as I had a flick through.

    Ian
Great article I skimmed over it last night
You seemed to cover all the basics with out getting to deep into it.

And that would make it a good read for someone starting out in hand tools.
A second article following on with more detail would be fantastic.
You seem to be a natural with the pen(keyboard).

We appreciate the clean shirt very smart

    Cheers Matt

I've moved on to something else for the moment, Matt. It's about big screws, so I'm sure you'll like that.

If there un conventional I will be all ears [emoji3]

(You have seen the saw I'm making, with your name attached we'll sort of in the saw section.
But unfortunately have been out of the creative zone for awhile so it will be a slow built [emoji20])

Read your article this evening Ian. Excellent!

Learnt stuff about handle positioning on the plate, so that was a bonus beyond the enjoyment of just reading the article itself.

And I agree with Simplicity about follow-on articles. Lots more to be said about saws.

    Cheers

True, OG, but remember we're preaching to the converted here. It was meant to be a general answer to a question I get asked a lot. My main aim was to help people who are starting to use saws seriously, by talking about some different types of backsaws & why you might choose one over another to do a particular job. As I said, the magazine puts limits on the size of any one article, so there is only so much I could say. These sorts of articles also have to try to satisfy a very broad audience, so you can't just dive in using a lot of saw terminology as you could here. I also tried to be careful to differentiate between fact & opinion - any reader of this part of the forum would know how quickly the latter gets you into trouble!

So given all those constraints, I'm pleased that someone like yourself finds something useful in it!

Nothing more on saws planned for the moment, as I hinted to Matt, I've just written another article on how to make big wooden screws with basic gear. I thought it was timely since there seems to be an upsurge in interest, thanks to a couple of magazine 'gurus' talking them up. The amount they want to charge you for a ready-made wooden bench-screw is outrageous!
It may or may not fly, I had to break it into two parts because of the size, which may not suit the mag. So if it gets rejected, I may post it here as a coupe of PDFs instead....

    Cheers,
    IW

Wherever that article ends up it will be very well received based on my observations from the Brissy show. I guessed that was what you were alluding to, but pleased you have clarified it as I saw a good deal of censorship on the horizon connected with wood.

    Ian, write a book!

I found the article informative, especially since I come from the dark side of woodworking - the spinney side.

The book wouldn't have to be too big, probably only 500 A4 pages

Well Ian my friend, I went to the newsagent yesterday just to get the mag to read your article. It was worth the trip. Damn good article. It covers a lot of ground, probably in more detail than a beginner would digest, but I expect that one would read it a few times anyway since it should become a resource article. Pity it cannot be put up on the web for easy access .... or, perhaps you could write another version? I would be happy to host it on my website, if you need. Let me know.

    Regards from Perth
