Identification & numbering of planes
When one of the plane gurus has a few minutes and is pretty bored, may I request a short essay on how planes are numbered? I doubt I'm the only one bewildered.
In my innocence I thought that a #1 was the smallest and a #8 the biggest, with incremental sizing in between. I'm only talking about bench planes not the wierdo specialist router type and their Heath Robinson cousins.
Did each manufacturer have its own scheme? Does the 1/2 sizing indicate a different width? Why do some have left handed threads on the bezel and some right handed?
