Identification of an old vise
Hi All,
On a recent trip to Europe I came across a few old vises similar to this one. I have seen them in old woodworking factories.
Can anyone tell me the name of them? Not the maker, just the style.
Cheers
Bill

Blacksmiths vice.
The long leg transfers force to the floor/ground so you can hammer pieces that are in the vice without wrecking the bench. We don't know how lucky we are......

In a huge coincidence, I've just come back from an auction where I could have ($20? and a bit too rusty) bought one.
Don't really have the bench space for it though.........

Blacksmiths call them a 'Leg Vise', which I believe is their proper name. The end of the leg should be firmly inserted into a hardwood block on the floor so that the downwards forces bypass the bench altogether. I have 3 & they are actually pretty useless for wood working as they wobble far more than a regular vice when sawing, but they are great for pounding the s#$%%^*9 out of something, like driving an iron bearing into a wheel hub.

Leg Vices....
I hear they make good body jewelry - like nipple clamps and the like.
