No medallion or imprint of one removed. Handle doesn't scream out beech to me either. Going from the remaining etch I'm agreeing with the S&J idea but the handle doesn't seem to agree with us.

    Cheerio,

    Ray,
Orraloon was probably right with his WW2 suggestion.
If it had a medallion it would have had to have been a surface one and not the usual extra wide inlaid two part one common to Spearior.
    Cheers,
    Jim

I have just cleaned and sharpened a superior and the wording is as Jimbur says. The difference is it has 5 brass fasteners, one with a medallion. Perhaps the handle is a later addition. Take the handle off and see if the steel has 5 holes.

    Regards
    John

My Spearior is a panel saw and only has 4 fasteners. I attach image of the etching.
I've only cleaned it lightly. I paid the massive sum of $4 in an op shop!

I've been using it and cuts like a dream without me having to sharpen it. Feeling pretty smug as you might imagine.
