I'm sold on card scrapers!
Hello All,
Over the weekend I decided to give a go at making a couple of 'Lazy Susans'. I ducked down to the local recycled timbers yard a picked couple "tongue and groove" panks of Grey Ironbark ".
After cutting and joining into rough squares I thought I'd have a go at planing down the seems but considering that they were milled so well I picked up a scraper that my father-in-law made for me. I amazed how it well it worked. Given the density of the wood and that the scraper takes off such fine layers of wood it allowed me to easily and slowly work down to till I got it exactly how I wanted it. I'm sure if I was using a plane I would not have been able to get such a fine, level finish.
Mosts of the seems cannot even be felt when running a finger over them which is just what I wanted.
Thanks to all of you guys that promote the hand tools and I know know that I have been suckered in for life!
Cheers,
Craig GordonMe: I want to buy a circular saw.

carbide scraper
My neighbour is a boat builder and a bloody good craftsman. I had a yarn with him regarding scrapers and he said to try the carbide paint scrapers.
I recently bought a Stanley 80, apparently a very good cabinet scraper. I put the edge on it as per instructions and had a reasonable finish on Redgum. I thought I would compare it with the carbide scraper and I have to say on my minimal experience with these tools I prefer the paint scraper.
The paint scraper has a tubular steel handle and the carbide scraper blade fits into a holder. It make it easy to hold, no hot fingers etc and takes of a good 50 mm of fine shavings at a time. The Stanley only works on the small portion of the blade, that which is curved and touching the work surface. The carbide blade works on the whole edge. I am going to take it to the diamond hone and see if a sharper edge makes a difference.

I think it would be fun as well, I'll have to try and find a pic of Darth Vader. How do you set this up?

Well it looks like the "dark side" comment stuck Derek.
Only one question,"Where are you going to get a hand powered light sabre."
Kind regards and thanks for all the advice

In case you think the Darth Vader photo is a little too threatening, here's a picture of Dark Helmet from the Mel Brooks' movie: Spaceballs.
On second thoughts, maybe the Darth Vader picture is the right choice.
