Default I'm not REALLy a tool junkie but.....

My tool buying is occasionally impulsive but I normally purchase a tool that I know I will use. Magazines are largely the cause of this affliction although I have been known to design a piece that NEEDS this new tool so that I can justify it to myself.
HOWEVER, occasionally, raw tool lust takes over and strange tools just seem to appear in the backpack that I have worn to the SWWW show!

    I'm not REALLy a tool junkie but.....-burfitt01-jpg

These little jewels are found on one of the smaller stands, they are made for Burfitt who, I think is based in WA, and are made to his design. They cost about $10 and take up absolutely no room in the backpack. They are beautifully made and an absolute wizard at cutting, bending holding and forming .... of which I do VERY little!
One of them holds very small brads for driving, which has been a real boon since the fingerectomy, and so it's about the only one that has any regular use.
i would like to do something special to practically store them. Many years ago, my Father was a very early implementer of the electronics world making and selling Australia's only transistor amplifiers. He had his tools, cutters, pliers, small screw drivers, probes etc stored in a leatherette roll, with elastic stitched in as holders and I'm thinking of doing the same thing with these BUT, as they are as 'wide' as they are 'long' I doubt that it would roll up very well. I thought of stapling elastic to a nice piece of timber but then I have created another storage problem?
If I had one of those beautiful little tool cabinets with drawers I could cut foam and store them in the shallow drawers BUT I don't have one and where would I store IT?
    Any thoughts?

On the wall or in a drawer?

In either case you could use a strip of timber with REMs buried in the back so that they come to about 1mm from the front face. I'm just making a plane till atm and using two 20mm REMs buried to about 2mm of the front face gives a surprisingly strong pull through the timber - even on a #5 plane.

Alan I'd check the use of
HOWEVER, occasionally, raw tool lust takes over and strange tools just seem to appear in the backpack that I have worn to the SWWW show!
it may have security following you closely in future.

You've seen my draw of part of my pliers, vice grips, tin snips collection if thats all you have you need not worry to much.

A roll could be done IF the nose of one set was placed between the handles of the other it would be very bulky though.

A draw OR a wall board done similar might work (If i recall you did something along those lines?)

I'm a sucker for a custom fit HD foam lined draw or box. (comes from years of custom fitting archery equipment to it's protective/carry case)
Why not make a small set of draws and include similar tools.
All nice and orderly, everything in it's assigned place.
Sorry, must be my CDO kicking in. (it's like OCD but all the letters are in their correct alphabetical alignment, as they should be)
Those were the droids I was looking for.

    G'Day Alan,
I used to work in engineering and maintenance procurement for some 25 plus years...
I LOVED the advertising magazines and brochures with tools sales and new tools.....
Always justified the purchase there of for the tradies as something which would help them do a better job, quicker..
And of course there was always a sample or one left over for me to try out...good stuff....
Saying this I'd say that I only have almost as many pliers and cutters as yourself ...
    Cheers, Peter

Great idea FF but, from the comfort of my lounge room, having just watched Sherlock, I've remembered that they are stainless steel and i haven't checked if they are 300 series or 400 so they may be non magnetic?
They truly are jewel-like so maybe they do deserve a 'proper' box?

    Hi Fletty

I went looking for a picture of Kit Africa’s Hexagonal Tool Tote as described by Jim Tolpin in the Toolbox Book and came across this

Similar to what Wheelin' is suggesting -- you could use leather or cotton duck pockets or elastic straps

    link is here http://toolmakingart.com/2010/04/27/...ack/#more-1324

    Kit Africa's tool roll

Ok here's the spanner in the works(tools).

Does it have to be a roll why not a sandwich.

You can fold over with a divider in the middle with 6 on each side or 4 per slice with a middle section that comes out.

I reckon your on to something Christos, like a leather covered book!
I'll have to make it expandable because if Burfitt comes up with any more designs ... they'll be following me home too!
Thank you everybody, great ideas from all.

You could try adapting a fountain pen case like this:

    This one came off eBay.

like the pen case decent size one maybe with an additional centre board for additional tools. I could see use of that Blackbean and contrasting timber looking nice.

    Alan

Just returning to your original ideas and the chisel roll: How about a pocket either side of the roll so the pliers and cutters sit opposing each other. That way you have increased the width of the roll and reduced the diameter and you can "roll on." .

It would require a custom made roll, but hell, those tools are worth it. Soft leather or cloth with a preference for the leather.
