The family is growing. K13 and K18 are on the way. Again Konrad has used some ugly desert ironwood burl.

Butt ugly!!
Yes absolutely un-useable they are just Butt Ugly.
Tell you what shoot them up to me and I'll give them some good heavy use on some rough timber and see if I can get a bit of character into them for you! What Oh OK.
I would love to raid Konrad's wood pile, every new plane I have seen of his is just smack you in the face beautiful with awesome infills. Hope you enjoy them kevjed. Keep the photos coming as they arrive, I never tire of looking at cool tools.
No I'm not the least bit jealous, but yes Ok, sometimes I tell a little lie

I think I said that this was going to be a big plane month. These four so far and a few more soon.
Thanks again to Konrad for the K series and to Ron Brese for the Winter series.
Simply stunning tools. Wonderful workmanship and that wood.
The work so well and the ugly wood just spoils the point of them. Let's face it. When the blades are sharp...they take shavings from wood. Go figure.Last edited by kevjed; 15th July 2015 at 08:56 PM. Reason: double image

Hmmm, there's one or two nice planes in that lot, alright.
I reduce any envy by thinking I wouldn't like to be custodian of so may beautiful oblects - I'd be paranoid & checking them several times a day in case the merest rust-spec appeared on any of the ferrous metal.
Cheers,IW

Nice selection! Assuming they are all users, how do you chose which plane to use?

Well, with the AUD taking a dive in the past months my little shopping addiction has come to an end. The last of my 50th birthday year treats are about to arrive. The exchange rate has killed me on these last two. I now have to be a grown up again and start making my own tools again. Its been a very big year and so I present the last of the infills for 2015. Thanks to Raney for these two. A DT4 and a DT1. I'll get a picture of the DT family once they arrive.20151102-OMD21101.jpg20151102-OMD21124.jpg20151102-OMD21101.jpg
How do you choose which one to use? Well...I just make sure that I rotate through them all. I find that I just choose one that fits the job at hand. After all, if the blade is sharp and set well all they do is take shavings. Lol. Its like cars I suppose. They get you from point A to point B. Some people go fast, some go slow...some travel in a WXR some in a Pinto, others the 911 or 488. Some restore a kingswood and know every nut and bolt, cable and tube in every system.
For me, I'm from humble stock. I like to understand how things work. I like to make things. I like to make things to make things. I love beautiful, functional things. I'm still learning lots about these tools. They all feel different to use. Some people will tell you that they are all the same. "They cut wood." So true. Do I have too many tools? Yes i do. Can I use them to the max...I'm working on it.
We all know that we can make almost anything with just a few tools on hand. I love having the experience of feeling each tool give a different feedback on the one board. So I might use two or three planes to complete the one task. If I were to try and make a living from producing things from wood it would be totally different. For me, its a total learning experience. Each tool has a different feel in the hand. They feel different as they take a shaving.
I'm lucky to have used a number of old tools and learnt to restore and use them. I feel even more lucky to be in a position to acquire and learn to use some of the more exotic tools from people like Konrad, Raney, Ron, Chris, Terry, Colen and Trent. I'd like to be able to get tools from Karl, Wayne and Bill too but common sense has to come in to it at some stage. I've more than enough on my plate for now.
My 5 yo, the one that dropped one of my first planes from Konrad, can now remove the blade, sharpen it, set if back in the plane and then take a shaving of less than 0.001". Who ever said that its too hard to learn the old ways is a fool. Its childs play ...literally.
Enough of my ramblings and me trying to justify my addiction to myself as well as you. I have made my choices and now I have to make things to fill the house. My little girl is going to help me make her first real study desk in the next month or two. But, thats for another thread.

Here is my little family of planes by Raney Nelson.
The DT1 and the DT4 arrived yesterday and they work a treat.
I'll get a pic of the Brese and Marcou family soon.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1447308322.497238.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1447308346.462833.jpgLast edited by kevjed; 12th November 2015 at 05:06 PM. Reason: add photos
