Hi Dom,
For me it is an easy decision, I only do small stuff and often think it would be good to have a nice nimble little LN No 3. I would go for a standard pitch and buy a second blade and grind that to achieve the same increased final cutting angle. I have used a couple of planes with the increased angle and even though it did handle the reversing grain better I think it might have been easier to just use a scraper.I did not like using them.I already have a bronze no 4 and an iron 4 1/2, I can not remember the last time I used the 4 1/2 it just sits there like the big lump that it is.All the best.

Hi guys,
I realised I never updated this thread. I ended up picking up a Lie Nielsen No.8 initially, then both the LN 48 and 49 about 4 months ago. Had the itch again recently and after deciding to pick up the bronze #3 and finding it out of stock at LN Australia I ordered the #5. I suspect the #3 will follow when I have some money burning a hole in my pocket again in the future - unless I actually start saving instead of spending... nah .
Thanks for the great discussion, suggestions, advice and indulging me in what is/was a very fortunate dilema to have.
Cheers, Dom

Follow up to the follow up - super impressed by LN Australia. I've sometimes complained about poor delivery times for retailers in Australia -not so in this case. I ordered my plane at about 3pm on Tuesday, was sent an email about 45min later saying the plane had shipped, and received it today! Really impressive. Also impressed with the careful and thorough packaging every time I've ordered something through them - particularly books, which I've found some other retailers don't package well.
Cheers, Dom
