Simon Barley has that Ward and Payne saw medallion dated at c1880. he only has one round medallion pictured at 18mm diameter.

not seen one - I'd happily have it in my 'collection' of saws.

Thank you, Zsteve. It's incredible to think the saw is still around after so long.

I think you've reached a point somewhere between extreme enthusiasm & obsession.....

I speak from hypocrisy. When I built my "last & final" toolbox to house all the tools I would ever need or want about 20 odd years back, my saw collection fitted fairly comfortably in the doors, as planned:

    Main T-box.jpg

The saws I had were sufficient for any normal cabinetry, but saws sort of 'happen' round my shed & it wasn't long before I had a few 'extras'. I considered some alternatives like adding an internal door to hang them on, but rejected that idea for a few reasons. Instead, I built an "overflow" saw till. That held the extras comfortably for a while, but needed a bit of modification when a few new saws snuck into my shed - this is about the 3rd iteration, with the racks re-made to squeeze in a couple more:

    Saw cupboard.jpg

But then I acquired a few more saws & no amount of constructive squeezing could get them in without making it very awkward (or dangerous!) to retrieve the one I wanted. For a couple of years I kept the smaller ones in a drawer, but that is inconvenient, I had to shuffle out the one I wanted & remove its teeth protector (then find the protector again when I put it away). Last week I became sufficiently annoyed with the arrangement that I re-made the door, adding a frame to create a space where I could hang some small saws:

I really do have too many saws, and the more sensible (& quicker!) solution would have been to have a severe cull, but when I tried, I found some good or completely spurios reason why each & every one was essential. But this is it - NO NEW SAWS - definitely - read my lips! Well, that's my resolve (for the rest of today, at any rate).......

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Ian,

Could you go into a little more detail regarding extreme enthusiasm an obsession please.

    Cheers Matt[emoji3064].

Simple, Matt - an enthusiast may have one or maybe two more saws than he/she really needs (like me ) - that's ok and still (almost) under control. Obsessive is when I can't make even a pathetic justification for the "extras".....

There's only 25 (visible) saws in the pics....

    Hi Ian,

Yes, it has become an obsession, a thoroughly enjoyable obsession that I'm learning a lot from!

I appreciate your solution to your dilemma. I'm trying a different approach; I'm refraining from making a saw till/cabinet. This way, I figure, I can acquire as many saws as I can fit in the shed!

No no, joh - if it's still enjoyable & hasn't caused any family rifts, it's not an obsession, just an enthusiastically-pursued hobby - obsessions require some sort of treatment....

Hmmm, perhaps it is an obsession, or at least teetering on the edge....

If you can still count them, you’re fine. Right?

I like that Colin - we will adopt it as a maxim for the hand-tools section.

Some people may be excluded from the "normal" category on this basis though - too bad, Bushmiller, you've got a problem, & I suspect Geoff may have more braces than he can enumerate in a regular stock take........

No problem here. I am just going to hone my counting skills and enlist the hands and feet of friends and relatives.... I may have to find a few more friends.

And it's before and after photos like these that keep us buying just one more saw! (I picked up a nice little dovetail saw yesterday, Tyzack with open handle)

Came out surprisingly well, j. I think I would have passed that one up, looking at it in the "before" pic (or bought it simply for the saw bolts!)....

    Cheers,
