Jointer and Smoother
I built two planes yesterday, a jointer and a smoother. Let's say that they are a little different from the usual fare.
Firstly the jointer (in Jarrah) ...
And, secondly, the smoother (in She-oak) ...
Both are razee designs, of which I am fond. Blades are A2. Lever cap knobs are from Lee Valley.
The obligatory smoother shavings ..
Views of the planes, together ..
Oh yes, if you did not get it immediately, they are built around the inset planes from Lee Valley. They are even tinier than I realised. That's a 12" rule alongside the planes ...

Ok, I'm now off to see what I can invent around them. Ideas folks?

Well you sucked me in. When I saw the opener "I built two planes yesterday, a jointer and a smoother....", I just thought "That must've been a looong day, Derek!"
Clever little thing, for sure, but can't think of any immediate need for it, myself. Thgat doesn't mean I couldn't have a lot of fun playing with a few different combinations & permutations on a rainy afternoon. I presume from the catalogue dimensions that you just drill a couple of 3/4" holes in the wooden body, and join them up, then epoxy the steel body in? I'm guessing the sole would then need a bit of lapping to bring everything clean & level?
Cheers,IW

Very nice. The jointer looks 'full size' and the darker colour hides the insert a bit. The pics of the smoother are where things started to look a bit 'off'........what's with the funny large grain and what's that dark area behind the blade? What's he used there? Ebony?
Insert planes, eh? Never heard of them. They look like fun.We don't know how lucky we are......

Nice little planes
I picked what you were using at the second photo of the jointer.
What I want to know is how they compare in size to the minature Router, shoulder and edge planes
are they functional outside of a plane bodyregards from Alberta, Canada

Hi Ian
They make incredible violin planes. There is not enough meat to grind the soles into curves, but as a small, flat smoother they are excellent. I used one the other day to chamfer the edges of a curve, which a small block plane or even a spokeshave struggled to do.
I plan to do a few more of these planes - should make great Christmas presents.
(Oh, and I have reshaped the smoother's handle - it looked ok until I saw the photos. Now it will fool you! ).

for a cheap violin brass plane these on ebay are only around $10 or so each, he has them in ebony as well. small ebony (specie?) various shaped planes as a kit are less than $10 each (hollows and rounds etc), singularly are only about $12ish, has them in flat smoothing at about quarter the price of the LV insert too which is another option. from a different seller these rose wood (?) high angle planes are incredibly cheap @ $12 which includes shipping to Oz!! incredible price really, they actually work too (to my utter amazement) and look much better in the hand than the pics, various sizes from about 5" and down...you can still give em away for xmas, kinda lol..cant have the fun of making them yourself like the nice little guys Derek has made, but these are much cheaper, shipping is cheaper too than from LV in the US
cheers
