    Default Joplin Saw Vice

I spotted a Joplin Saw Vice at the Quenbeyan Car Boot Sale today. The fellow was asking $75, but that's out of my price range.
Who were/was Joplin, and were they any good? The vice worked well and had no cracks.

    Thanks,

    Craig

A NSW manufacturer - I think they were in Sydney. Dates - probably 1950-60s, they also made vices and plumbing gear.

$75 is a bit high I'd say, you'd get a disston for less than that. I have one, it works fine. just got to check the jaws come together ok.

I have one also. Works great after a bit of fettling. $75 is probably a bit steep, but they seem hard to find down under (saw vices generally that is)

$75 is not unreasonable if it is in really good nic. Saw vises tend to sell in the $40-$90 range. Joplins although less known as a brand tend to go in the higher prices for a very similar design to some of the Disston & Dawns. Maybe they are rarer and more collectable??

    Default Small confession...

I have a small confession to make. The guy selling the vice saw me go back twice and offered it to me for fifty.

I'll post a photo of it shortly.

I was a bit embarrassed because I have just about finished a larger wooden one, and fifty was too good a price to walk away from.

Being embarrassed on these forums about buying tools is a bit like being embarrassed about having a drinking problem at an AA meeting

Joplin for Back saws the large wood one for panel saws no problem!!!

Vibration is your enemy it will wear out your files much faster so make sure you tighten the clamps up nice and tight. Also if the jaws aren't locking down quite tight enough the lever sometimes wears a groove in the casting if you dissassemble it and epoxy a small piece of saw plate over the groove it should work like new.

I regarding vibration, I attached some bicycle inner tube rubber to both sides of the jaws and it works much better

    Cool Pictures as promised

Here we go. This thing is in terrific nick. There's barely a scratch on it and the jaws clamp so tightly, I can't see light between them. I take that as a good sign.

There's some rust on it from disuse, but overall it is in good nick.

I intend to follow some of the good advice that's been given here and use this for backsaws while using my larger wooden vice for bigger saws.

Well, it sees you didn't waste your money on a defective one. Good work.

Nobody ever accused me of giving good advice before!!!!!!!

Make sure the bench clamp and ball clamp are done up nice and tight, and have at some saws..Don't forget the in action shots and the results.

Nice Joplin vise Craig. Your bench top looks on the thinner side, which will most likely aid to creating some vibration when you commence filing. if you install a wooden block between the underside of the bench and the tightening it should help you a lot. Make it around 12" in length x 1 1/2" in thickness and it will act as a stiffener to your bench top.
