Default Joseph Tyzack & S ons dovetail saw

    Hi

I picked up this old Joseph Tyzack dovetail saw (8 inch) yesterday. I have heard of Henry and William Tyzack but not Joseph.

I did a quick clean up today to see if I could find any more markings on the blade and found nothing.

Does anyone know the storey behind Joesph Tyzack and are these saws common?

How old would this saw be? Does anyone have any sales catalogues for Joseph Tyzack saws?

Will be keen to heard what you know about the company?

    Cheers
    Stew

    Stew,
Here is a pic from their catalogue with the saws from May 1st 1922.
Also a revised price list from Oct 1st 1922.

    Cheers,
    Peter

Hi Peter, interesting differences between the catalogue illustrations of the handles and Stew's saw. Strew's is much less refined, and presumably somewhat later

    Peter,
    Yes.
On the pages open there are an astounding 6 grades of saw available, only the top 2 carried the same mark as Stew's.
Best Cast Steel, Warranted Cast Steel, G. Naylor & Co, Fitzwilliam, Daedalus and Bowden.
They range in price per dozen from 64 shillings down to 16 1/2 shillings.

The lowest grade has a handle most like Stew's saw, but on Stew's saw the brass back has the full J Tyzack stamp.
It seems to me it might have taken quite a few years to get the 6th lowest grade from 1922 up to the grade with the top mark.... as those nice quality saws above it were dropped from the line of saws they sold.
    Perhaps post war austerity???

I'm not all that familiar with the company history.
I do have a Tyzack catalogue re-print of a date I've forgotten ...somewhere....sure it's packed away in a box for 4 years now, since we moved house.??
I'll dig it out later tonight.

    Cheers,
    Peter
