Default Perth LN Hand Tool Event - a short report

Here are a few pics I took at the LN Hand Tool Event this past weekend. They do not convey the buzz that was there as I only managed to find time as the presenters were setting up their booths. Hopefully others that attended and took photos will post them here.

The Event was held at the Perth Wood School, which is run by David Howlett. David is trained in both cabinetmaking and teaching, ran the woodworking curriculum at Wesley College (a local prestigious private school), and opened the PWS a few years ago. They have just moved - expanded - into new premises to meet the increasing demand for tuition in Perth. David (pictured below) often runs specials on wood, so contact him for good deals.

Of course at the centre was Lie-Nielsen tools, in the care of David Eckert, who runs LN Australia. Here he is busily polishing the brass ..

And the tool trays are filling ...

Neil Erasmus (below) builds high-end contemporary furniture, is a multi-award winner, author of innumerable magazine articles, and runs his wood school up in the Hills with his wife, Pam (who also attended the Event). Neil demonstrated handcut half-blind dovetailing.

He brought along a couple of interesting items. The first was a waterstone pond ...

The other was his shooting boards, one with an up-ramp for shooting veneer. Alongside these you will see a cabinet, the design/construction of which he teaches in one of his courses ...

And there was Lynn Nixon demonstrating the art of inlay. My apologies for the blurry picture (I had a point-and-shoot camera that was handheld) ..

Of course now we come to Chris Vesper, Toolmaker Extraordinaire! I had the pleasure of having Chris to stay for the weekend. Alas, we did not have the time at the Event for a repeat of out houndstooth dovetail-off, as we did at the last Perth Wood Show.

Chris had some really beautiful marking tools on show. Of course, I caught him during the set up - should have repeated this later on ...

And then there was this one of Chris taking a photo of me taking a photo of him ..

That's my bench. Shooting boards at the front ..

... dovetailing at the other end, with an emphasis on drawer-making (the link between dovetails and shooting) ..

There were also the Knew Concepts fretsaw, and its development from jeweller's and coping saws ..

One of the highlights of the weekend was the barbie at my home on Saturday evening. Good company, conversation (mostly tall tails), butterflied lamb, red wine and cold beer.

Of course I did come away with a few new tools. David made a wonderful gift of a 55 degree frog for my LN Anniversary #4 1/2 smoother. I have tried it out briefly and it does a terrific job on difficult grain. Thank you David.

    I also purchased a LN #49 tongue-and-groove plane ...

The fence spins around so that both sides of the joint can be planed with the same blade ..

This is the 1/2" plane and it is going to come in handy for making slips for drawers, as well as the panels for the rear of cabinets. It will see use in the near future.

From Chris Vesper's Aladdin's Cave I came away with a small (70mm) machinist square, which I have been wanting for a long time ..

... and one of Chris' joinery knives.

This is more like a chisel. In fact I referred to it as a reverse fishtail knife as it resembles two skew chisels back-to-back (see below alongside a Blue Spruce fishtail chisel for both size and configuration). The wood is 5000-10,000 year old River Red Gum.

    Until next time ..

    Regards from Perth

    Hi Derek,

    Great report, good pictures.
I bet you had a good time. Nice company, good quality tools.
What more could you wish for.

Thanks for the glimpse at what must have been a memorable event.

    Hi Derek,

Exactly how does that tongue and groove plane work? Does it just do the tongue, or does it somehow do the groove as well?

I'm confused just by looking at the way it swivels..

Ray the blade has a square notch in it that forms the tongue by removing wood from either side.
The notch is a tad under 1/3 the width of the blade and centred on the width.
when you swing the fence one side of the blade is covered and the exposed section being a tad wider than 1/3 of the blade width cuts the groove

    Hi Derek, Ian,

Thanks for that, I can see now how it works, nice elegant solution to cutting tongue and groove joinery.

    Much appreciated.

    Ray
